ciemnogrodzianin: You're absolutely right :( There is a difference between difficulty and forcing player to try different approaches without a single clue. Sometimes I use brute force to simply check all possible combinations or dialogue options – but in this case it's impossible or it'd be hard to use. Not sure how it may be played to be fun.
*spoilers*

Beyond things like the bones puzzle and the crystal keys, I was pretty good at figuring this one out....maybe I got lucky?

*end spoilers*

Anyhoo, I loved the intro and also the ending somewhat.....also the characters were nice enough as well & some of the music is very nice to listen to....but yeah, some puzzles were a bit meh/frustrating, so I can see why it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.

(I also like the theme/plot being presented...space travel to alien lands and etc....so for me maybe that helped make it more fun as well)

Sidenote: That Kingdom game looks nice.

Strange. I thought it's a result of missing data ("Awaiting more rankings"), but using GUI it looks fine (4.4).
Probably one more GOG DB bug. Nobody cares, so no reason to report :)

Hm... This game has ridiculously low ratings. People are complaining about dying a lot. It can't be that bad.
Dies.

InkPanther: Edit: Dying is definitely a recurring theme...
In old school adventure games that was like 1/4 the fun. ;D

Phew!

Btw, might wanna update it in your list above with the correct number ;)

Update to the thread: I will be playing the expansion for Hexen as well, as it seems it came out on the night between 1995 and 1996 so I think it counts. It will be my first time playing that bit when I get to it, so ya'll wish me luck, eh what? :)

Oops, thank you. Fixed. I haven't noticed, cause my browser seems to be double-slash-proof.

Fixed :) Good luck with Deathkings.

I think Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games rating suffers from it being given for free. If I remember correctly it was a freebie for participation in GOG beta or something like that. People not interested or surprised by it gave it 1/5. And Shadow of the Horned Rat simply didn't work for a lot of users. Those two probably deserve a higher place on that list.

I've given up on Kingdom The Far Reaches. ;F
OK, GOG's win-only installation does not work under Wine, but you can (and probably should) still use your own DosBox to run Stonekeep. It starts awesome! :D

The intro alone is very nice...tbh I think it's like you say and maybe also people not used to/good at playing such games as well.

The animations look nice....mayhaps you might want to find a compilation of em or let's play online to watch the rest(if you want, that is) at least. :)

Nah, I've tried it, died and I'll let it rest. I've never enjoyed adventure games in the first place anyway.

Haha, one of GOG's early YouTube posts. And what a development story.
Hello dear fellow time travellers!

I am calling in for my first status report.
Passing the entrance exames of the Starfleet Academy was easier than I remembered.
So far, I made steady progress and reached my fourth and probably last 'study year'.

For those who are not acquainted with "Star Trek Starfleet Academy - Starship Bridge Simulator" (yeah, a ridiculous long title including one (R) and two (TM) for the SNES version of the game that was released a couple of years before actual the PC version/'remake') I documented my experience with quite a lot of screenshots.

First, let us see how we are introduced to the game:

[picture 00]
We are in a small shuttle on our way to the Starfleet headquarters on Earth. After some small talk with other cadets on board, we reach the site of the training facility and are welcomed by the game's main menu.
(As you might have guessed already, I am playing the game in German, because this is the version I remember the most--with both its translation errors and added jokes or references.)

[pictures 01 & 02]
Now, it is time for 'creating' or rather selecting our character--very old school, either male or female and only a handful of alternatives of first and last names. We also choose one of three difficulty levels. I left it on average, which I guess is medium or at least one of the two easier ones. Legendary gets near impossible close to the end of the game.
Then we find ourselves at the campus with the game's main interface outside of missions in the famous bridge simulator. The five icons on the bottom of the main screen represents the different locations and activities.
They are from left to right: the classroom, the mission briefing room (which leads to the bridge simulator), the canteen (a small cafeteria), our bed and study room, and finally the trainings simulator for extracurricular simulations.
The trainings simulator allows for practicing ship to ship combat for one or for two players (split screen), three special missions based on an episode of the original series or the second or sixth movie. Here we can also repeat the tutorial (basic training) or adjust the level of difficulty in between missions.

Next, I am going to showcase the functions or purpose of each room, then the available ships in the game and the different bridges of the pilotable ships. Afterwards, we take a look in how a usual mission plays out, before I am going to discuss my observations during gameplay and with respect towards my memories of playing the game in the past.

ciemnogrodzianin: (...)
Is it something like Dragon's Lair Trilogy, where you need to press a correct button in 2 miliseconds to avoid spectacular death? :) That was fun for me and if this one is similar, it'd be nice to try it someday :)
And hello ciemnogrodzianin!

The game "Tsioque" comes really close to the "Dragon's Lair" experience and is even better in some aspects.
Maybe, you want to take a look into it, in case you do not know or have not played it, yet.

Kind regards,
foxgog

Hello again!

Here, are the functions of the rooms accessible from the campus main screen (icons from left to right).

[picture 03]
This is the 'classroom'. Luckily, instead of lengthy lectures Mr. Rotherot (who looks a little bit similar to a Vulcanian here) gives us only relative vague tips or advice for our upcoming simulator mission. In the beginning of the game, those are really trivial, such as how to use the three stage alert system (green=normal for exploration, yellow=cautious with shields up, red=battlestations shields and weapons charged). Later on, his advice can give us actual clues on how to solve some of the more puzzle-like missions in order to achieve a full score (100%). Other than that, the 'classroom' gives access to our file listing the progress in which study year we are, the level of difficulty and statistics of our mission results.

[picture 04]
Next, is the 'briefing room'. We get intel on our current mission ('exame'), main objectives and some constraints. In the background we can see a rotating 3D model of our starship. This can be encouraging, especially, when you gain access to a new ship class! And before entering the bridge simulator, we usually can ask a couple of mission related questions. Later on, in the endgame, the opportunities for questions are drastically reduced: 'It is too late for asking questions!', 'Hurry, you do not have much time for this now!' and so on.
(Interestingly, Mr. Rotherot aged quite significantly between the few minutes ago giving us lectures in the classroom and now--see his now grey hair! Or maybe he is a shape shifter or an early model of a hologram, or more likely, someone was lazy in the translation.)

[picture 05]
The middle icon leads us into the 'canteen'--a small cafeteria or bar--where we can talk with our other bridge crew members, e.g. discuss the last mission, or do small talk with the bar man. Usually, he offers us to try a new mixture of his, though we are not to keen on his experiments, and he does not serve any alcoholic beverage either. The conversations try to make our crew members more alive, but often follow standard cliches: one is very ambitious and terrible in teamwork and social skills, another one is plagued by insecurity and feelings of inadequacy because of what happened to his father, a young Vulcan mimicking Spock, there is the shy and afirmation seeking non-human female, and an totally inexperienced young engineer who avoids conflicts and often needs encouragement.

[picture 06]
The main purpose of our 'study and bed room' is to show us the current 12 letter password (yes, no battery save here) and to pass to the next day by sleeping. For the curious, here is also a computer terminal with a brief database on the crew, ships, politics and known lifeforms. (#%*!§... copyrights on software is still a problem in Star Trek's future Earth society)

In my following update, I am going to talk and show more about the actual simulator and present the available ship models.

Kind regards,
foxgog

Back when GOG was new and not focused on spouting generic corporate PR text on everything so much.
