GOG also seems to have a serious case of sacrificing quality for quantity... And not having very much quantity to begin with.

We're no closer to seeing more variety in the kinds of games released, nor have we made any apparent progress in getting any newer content from big publishers. Saying that GOG has added X number of games is a technicality. Even if they have, selection has become completely stagnant.

JMich: The madman we were talking about? Downfall: Redux replaced the previous entry from what I recall, but X Rebirth: Home of Light did seem a different enough version to X Rebirth. May be mistaken of course.
X Rebirth is the base game.
X Rebirth: Home of Light Complete Edition is the base game+the two DLCs (Home of Light and Teladi Outpost)
X Rebirth: Home of Light Complete Edition Upgrade is just the two DLCs (Home of Light and Teladi Outpost).
As for Downfall: Redux, I'm not sure how you count it anymore, so I'll leave you to your madness.

JMich: By whose count? Or do you say there are 15 remaining InDev games, which is correct, since 2 of the InDev are no longer InDev.
Oh OK then. If we're counting the two no-longer-in-dev games, sure, it's 17.

The data is there. Feel free to add categories, then see if there is variety or not.

While I don't really care about who is the publisher, I was under the impression that quite a few of the big publishers did indeed return. And there are a few games that are coming, though unsure when.

Thread started as a response to the "GOG doesn't release old games anymore" threads. The numbers show that they do, and they release the same number, if not more, than they did before they introduced indies to the store.

Has it? What kind of games are not released on GOG anymore? Not titles, types of games.

Grargar: I'm not sure how you count it anymore, so I'll leave you to your madness.
Rule of thumb, if the title is replaced, it's not counted as a new release. If the title co-exists with the old one, then it is a new release. Does create issues with "Content+DLC" editions, but those usually have the same release date, thus counted as the same. X Rebirth had different released dates, thus why I counted both.

There is a logic to my madness. It might be crazy logic, but it makes sense to me (the madman) ;)

JMich: End of June, time for another update.

Compared to the 07/15-06/16 period, in the last 12 months GOG released 48 more games, 23 more Day 1 releases, 16 more pre-2K ones, and 19 more 10+ years old. 17 InDev games also came to GOG, and 2 of them released their full versions.

And the yearly data:
July 1st, 2008 till June 30th, 2009
GOG Released 128 games. Out of those, 58 (~45%) were pre-2K ones.
July 1st, 2009 till June 30th, 2010
GOG Released 101 games. Out of those, 42 (~42%) were pre-2K ones.
July 1st, 2010 till June 30th, 2011
GOG Released 71 games. Out of those, 1 (~1.5%) were Day 1 games, 34 (~48%) were pre-2K ones, and 39 (~55%) were 10+ years old.
July 1st, 2011 till June 30th, 2012
GOG Released 116 games. Out of those, 5 (~4%) were Day 1 games, 52 (~45%) were pre-2K ones, and 66 (~57%) were 10+ years old.
July 1st, 2012 till June 30th, 2013
GOG Released 171 games. Out of those, 39 (~23%) were Day 1 games, 46 (~27%) were pre-2K ones, and 64 (~37%) were 10+ years old.
July 1st, 2013 till June 30th, 2014
GOG Released 192 games. Out of those, 67 (~35%) were Day 1 games, 37 (~19%) were pre-2K ones, and 45 (~23%) were 10+ years old.
July 1st, 2014 till June 30th, 2015
GOG Released 261 games. Out of those, 81 (~31%) were Day 1 games, 40 (~15%) were pre-2K ones, and 62 (~24%) were 10+ years old.
July 1st, 2015 till June 30th, 2016
GOG Released 309 games. Out of those, 103 (~33%) were Day 1 games, 56 (~18%) were pre-2K ones, and 81 (~26%) were 10+ years old. 17 games entered InDev and 2 InDev were released.
Release dates have been taken from GOG pages, data is compiled here.

Next update to the list, New Year's Eve. Enjoy your summer everyone.
Why the "Pre 2K" cutoff date? The end of last century was Dec. 31st 2000, this century began Jan 1st 2001. It seems more "poignant" to set this marker for games published prior to Jan 1st 2001, instead of games published Dec. 31 1999 and earlier as Dec 31st 1999 is nothing special. Neither the end of the decade, nor the end of the century.

BrandeX: Why the "Pre 2K" cutoff date?
Same reason for the 10+ years. Arbitrary limit chosen to make counting easier.
I could have picked August 1995 as a cutoff date, going for the release date of Win95. I could have gone with sometime in 1998, when DOS releases started to be really scarce. I could have gone with my nephew's birthday, as a way to confound you even more.
And from what I recall, most of the "Why no old games" threads of 2013 were asking for pre-2K games, thus the reason I started counting those that way.

I like the mid-9x idea, when most games stopped being available for DOS.

Problem with that would be which year would one take as the cutoff point? There were 1995 games without a DOS version (Chaos Overlord), while there were also 1997 games with either both versions (Earth 2140) as well as 1997 games with only a DOS version (Fragile Allegiance). Hell, MobyGames lists 75 DOS games for the year 2000, even though most of them seem to be earlier titles.
But either way, the data is available, feel free to analyse them as you wish. That is why I'm doing it after all :)
...The hell? Why is this a sticky now? I mean, it's an interesting thread, full props to JMich and everything, but I don't really get why this needs to be permanently glued to the top of page 1. Blue people?

As the person who stickied this:

It's to stem the tide of "where are all the old games?" posts that get asked quite often :)

A worthy attempt, but we both know that nothing will stem that tide, because reality and facts have nothing to do with it ;).

I wouldn't get my hopes up that that will work -- it seems to me that most of "those" posters don't frequent the forum anyway, and probably don't bother to check stickies if they do.
Honestly, it probably would've been good enough to just link to it in the "Community Stickies" thread. :) Speaking of which...any chance that will be revived/redone (perhaps by our intrepid Community Manager?)

Also, such threads are fairly infrequent, small in number, and very easily refuted by the regulars. With regards to "problems this forum has", this is very, very low on the list.

But at least it will be easier to point to rather than having to search for it :P

Yeah, I agree here, I don't see it as a problem per se but more like background noise.

As for the more serious problems, we live in an imperfect world - why would this forum be any different? I say learn to appreciate the things that you like and not be bothered by those you don't. Life is short, time is precious.

Oh, and... Obliiiiviviivivvioooon!!!!

Hear, hear. :)
...at this point, I didn't even know threads COULD be stickied.
