Coelocanth: But it wouldn't be for one game. You'd get hooked and rejoin the PC Master Race and start buying PC games again. Join us! We have cookies, all beautifully rendered in stunning graphical detail!

jamyskis: Hardly. I've been trying to find a reason to really get back into PC gaming, but what my experience has essentially boiled down to is picking up the PC boxed version of a game, reading the back, finding "Steam required" or "Origin required" or "UPlay required", putting it back and buying the PS4 version instead. I don't buy digital unless it is VERY cheap, as in €5 or less.

I'm still waiting for DRM-free boxed versions of Divinity: Original Sin and Wasteland 2 - essentially the only two reasons for me to really return to PC gaming outside of playing the stuff I already have - but since those are unlikely to ever appear, those two will be bundle fodder for me 2-3 years down the line, and I have enough to play until then.

I'm not someone who goes apeshit crazy over 30fps vs. 60fps, 720p vs. 1080p, or various degrees of anti-aliasing. Sure, I can notice it in comparisons of screenshots, but when it comes to playing the games, like much of the civilised world, I rarely make a big deal out of it. I don't mod a great deal, with the exception of a few Elder Scrolls tweaks. So what is the essentially the difference for me if I game on PC? DRM. Which, to be frank, is something that I can do without given that I have the choice.

Enebias: So, basically, I'd say: if you surpass the minimum requirements, even if not by much, I would recommend to get it on PC. PC mater race crap aside, consoles will necessarily have lower resolutions, terrible framerate (all right, that is based on my perception of the average 30, yet as a former X360 owner I can state that in many games there have been many dives under that limit) and much worse textures, so I think that it would be hard to have a worse product on your computer than on a console. Just think about the comparison between TW2 on PC and Xbox 360: imo, even on the lowest settings, the PC won hands down.
Of course, when in doubt it would be better to wait until release and see how it actually runs on other people's machines before deciding.
avatar
jamyskis: The thing is, the game being DRM-free at retail, I would have at least been willing to take that risk if my system was just a bit above the recommended specs. If the game didn't perform adequately, I could have at least re-sold it and cut my losses. The problem in my case though is that my GPU is exactly on the minimum line (an HD 7870), and my CPU is a Phenom X4 920, overclocked from 2.8GHz to 3.0GHz. I've tried overclocking to 3.2GHz, it overheats. That puts my CPU at a tack below the minimum requirements and puts into question just how conservative those requirements are.

It's good and possible that the specifications given there are for medium or high detail as opposed to ultra. If that's the case, I'd still go for the PC version and see how the PC develops from there on out. But as you say, short of CDPR releasing a demo or benchmark, it's better to wait until release to see how it runs on everyone else's machines.
and there it goes again, how much does sony pay you for this hidden ad shit?

Just to be clear, my entire post was tongue-in-cheek, not meant to be taken seriously.

And there is goes again, dickheads like yourself proving why the "PC master race" is one of the most pathetic basement-dwelling subsets of the human race. You (and Elenarie to boot) must really have some serious fucking insecurities if you feel the need to attack someone just for playing on another platform.

Again, I knew there was a reason I stopped posting here.

Fair enough.

Penny Arcade apparently isn't aware of Assassin's Creed Unity's requirements. :P

For this reason I'm getting out of Cloud Gaming ("PC Gaming"). I decided to spend the money elsewhere, instead of wasting it on region-locked and censored account subscriptions and high-speed Internet required to download everything.

Maybe I get further into retro consoles (the offline ones without subscriptions, so no PS4 for me). Currently I'm playing PoP:TSoT on PS2, which has proper controller support, unlike the PC version which I also own on GOG, where I never got successfully through the tutorial.

It was cheaper also, the (quite used) DVD did cost me less than $1. Just a side note: Valve successfully killed the used market for PC games, now older console games in new condition are cheaper than PC downloads down the line, because they have to compete with the used market.

Regarding Witcher 3: I'm amused by the fact, that my rig doesn't meet the minimum requirements, while it still runs Star Citizen. And of course, I won't upgrade until the latter is released.

The PC versions have perfect controller support, they certainly did when they were new. I played through the trilogy with my trusty Rumblepad 2, never had any trouble.
I've been meaning to replace my gaming rig with a brand new one, at least I've got a stronger incentive now.

I never owned a Rumblepad 2. But that's just another issue, that "PC gamepad controller" nowadays means "Xbox controller" with a complete different API. This one got screwed up by Microsoft though. Maybe the PC version works with my DualShock 2 connected to an USB converter.

Yeah, well, can't blame the games for being incompatible with the Xbox 360 controller because - you said it yourself - Microsoft screwed up all sorts of things when introducing that one and the XInput API. I guess whether the DualShock 2 will work fine with DirectInput games such as the PoP trilogy depends on the USB converter you're gonna use. I haven't used one myself yet but I guess that one (and its drivers?) will determine what input the games ultimately get.
Starting to think we should spread word about GOG when TW3 is still hyping up. I kinda started a topic on the Steam forums on the hardware specs and left a little buy on GOG cheerio message at the bottom. If anyone who pre-ordered can come and brag about GOG at the risk of being banned, they're welcome to do so.

I only left some posts/revies for Demonicon (dark eye title) and Bound by Flame half a year ago. Do you have a link?

//edit: forgot my password and you can only reset Steam passwords if you have the client installed I think. Is this my community account, my steam account or my helpdesk account for them, I wonder?!?
Important:

The Steam password reset process can only be completed through the Steam application on a compatible Windows, Mac OSX, or Linux computer. If you do not currently have Steam installed, please see Installing Steam for more information

You'll probably get banned by tomorrow if you troll like I did with the GOG promo though.
