Last week it was like 15ºC during the day (we even reached 18ºC at some point) and 10ºC during the night, but it seems that winter visited us at last. Last night it was -2ºC and it snowed for a while. Today the weather is sunny again but the temp haven't passed the 3ºC mark during the day. Anyway, won't be for long until the temp reaches two digit numbers! :)
Seems that we'll have -17ºC this night. Should be fun:)

timppu: Is that on day or night? Close to sea level or somewhere high up in the mountains?

When I was in Montreal in late January one year, it seemed to me night temperatures would easily go down to -25 C or so, but then it would warm up up to 0 degrees or so daytime. So there was quite a high disparity between the day and night temperatures, which is not what I am used to in Finland. Logical explanation is that Montreal is quite a bit more to the south than Helsinki (about as south as e.g. Paris), so the sun affects the temperatures more especially in winter.
That was mid-morning, about 11:00AM. We're in the bald-ass prairies of eastern Alberta, about 600m ASL. Normal daytime temperature for us is between -15C and -20C. We generally only get a few days a year below -30 - yesterday was one. By 3:00PM yesterday it was -28C. At bedtime it was -23C. I woke up this morning to -21C with a high today of -18C, so we're back to normal.

That brings up a couple interesting question for people:

1.) What's the hottest temperature you've ever seen?
2.) What's the coldest temperature you've ever seen?

For me, the hottest was 40C (104F). My brother-in-law got married on the beach in Maui in August. It was 40C during the ceremony. Brutal time to be wearing a suit.

The coldest was -50C (-58F). Not too surprising - my truck wouldn't start that day.

hummer010: It's cold here too.

Today it's -35C (-31F) here.

seleapi: What? Humans can even live at -35C? :D
Probably, just not without warm clothes. I'm part Norwegian and the warmest place any of my ancestors came from was Ireland. T-shirt weather for me is basically anything above 3 C. A tad higher if I'm just standing around for long periods of time and below 0 C if I've got a hat to cover my ears and I'm moving around a bit.

It gets really old having people bitch about how cold it is and it's not even 10 C and I'm just standing there without even getting goose bumps.

hummer010: 2.) What's the coldest temperature you've ever seen?
I didn't have a thermometer handy, but my eyes actually froze shut one day. I thought that was the sort of thing that people only joke about, but, no. It can in fact happen, and it's a miserable experience, since not only does it have to be cold, there has to be enough wind to whip tears out of your eyes to freeze in your lashes. It probably wasn't even as low as -40, honestly, but the winds were gusting over 100kph, so whatever that does to the wind chill, I don't know.

Do not recommend.
Sorry, the only person I want telling me about the weather is Jackie Denardo, Channel 5.
It was -18 C when I went to work at 05,40 this morning. Now I have a cold.

Guess again.

Matewis: Lots of rainy cool weather in Pretoria lately which is wonderful, especially since it was preceded in early January by 40+ degree days that shattered several temperature records across the country. It even made the newspapers:
Some of that rain would be good, we're still melting down here.

Where down here? Cape Town? If so then my heartfelt sympathies :)

mystikmind2000: Oh yea, i saw the news on the floods.

I was very confused actually? .... my dad is from England, so i sarcastically gave my interpretation of what the bystanders in England were thinking.... "dahh, um, i think its rain?" As if the British never saw rain before and are acting all surprised by it! ???

But seriously, what i don't understand is how a country that experiences constant rain would be so surprised and unprepared for floods??
Well on one hand, we're talking about vastly more rain than we're used to getting here. It makes monsoon season look like a light shower.

Then there's the fact that we're never prepared for even the most mild alteration in weather.

I can't breathe through my nose and I can't sleep. I hate having a cold!

Had that a couple days ago - listening to these while trying to sleep really helped.
