We already knew that this whole Kickstarter project has been a mess for a while, but with the latest
updates it appears to me they have no clue what they're doing.

-Really, the initial promo material/demo was perfectly fine.
-Even after they switched engines it looked quite good... before they tried expanding into reworking or introducing completely new aspects into the game that seemed questionable.
- But now we've got this weird extreme backtrack to a way too close rendition of the currently available enhanced edition of the old System Shock - look, ma, flashy lighting and atmospheric effects! - which makes me wonder why I should ever bother with this new thingamajig.

Yeah, they should have just stuck with the very original plan. It just really baffles me how mishandled this project has become.
*le sigh*

For me, it's either this or Cyberpunk as far as sci fi first person shooters go. I think I still might go with this over Cyberpunk but I'm going to wait til the games have reviews to get them. I think it might be too early to tell right now.
Should have made System Shock 3 (yes, I like your new looks shodan, now try to kill me already). Then 4. Then 5. Then 6. Then a couple more. Would have bought all of them. New story based hard scifi FPS desperately needed nowadays. I can only think of Deus Ex (new ones) and that Prey reboot - all of them Steam only.
I hope the release of Cyberpunk does what C&C did for RTS back in the day and we get a big flood of like games - some of them good.

Mr.Mumbles: - But now we've got this weird extreme backtrack to a way too close rendition of the currently available enhanced edition of the old System Shock
Check these posts by Nightdive:
"Just to re-iterate what is stated in the description - these are the original levels using the original textures from the game. The purpose of this alpha is to rebuild all the levels 1:1 and be able to complete all the objectives necessary to finish the game. There will be many more updates, please stay tuned :) "

- question by an user:
So the final look will be more like this and you 're simply using the old game's map layout as a guide?
- Nightdive Studios:
Yes, it will look very similar to the Unity demo!

- another question:
So this is really how it's gonna be? The original textures and geometry with a few lights thrown in? [..] I tought you guys were doing a remake, not a simple "remaster".
- Nightdive Studios:
No, all of this art is temporary.

Hmmm. Well, that does make some sense I guess, but I'll remain skeptical about this whole thing until I can see the end result.
Go to indiedb and search for Citadel. That's the system shock remake I've been waiting for
well kinda glad here that i didnt back the kickstarter but let's see how the final game turns out
I don't like this newest version at all, it looks like one of those "Doom/Quake running on Unreal Engine 4" videos you can find all over YouTube. The first version they showed looked very interesting, this is just, meh...

Edit: I wrote this before reading phaolo's post, I guess there is still hope.

"weird extreme backtrack" was what entitled internet idiots were crying for the whole time. This is actually the studio listening to the loudest backers, even if they're idiots, and shaping the game according to their wishes to avoid their agressive backlash for "not delivering" what was "promised" or what they wanted.
Just my humble opinion: This remake is pretty much doomed from the get go. What's the main thing that set System Shock apart from its contemporaries? Being ridiculously ahead of its time.

Both System Shock games raised the bar and showed a way into the future. A remake of a 25 year old game probably won't be able to live up to that legacy.

Survival horror games and action RPGs are pretty saturated markets. I honestly can't see how the System Shock remake can set itself apart from those, other than brand recognition. I don't see how it could innovate these genres. It's probably going to be an ok game, but a System Shock game that is anything other than a ground-breaking, innovative masterpiece is ultimately a disservice to the series.
I think we're giving that youtube video a bit too much importance. It looks pretty much like a work in progress. I mean, you can even see the blocky pixels on the original System Shock assets.

But I have not followed this project, so what do I know.
Its literally stated right under the video that this is the original levels with original textures, which they use as a base to do the as-close-as-possible remake. All the updated more finished shots in their blog entry look pretty nice.

Still, fun how people first complained that its too much deviation, now they complain its to close...

Personally I wouldn't have minded to see their reimagined version, the concept shots looked great.

We have seen so many projects abandoned projects that I wouldn't be surprised if their "temporary" becomes the actual end result.

But who knows, maybe even that is quite good. Then it is more like a remaster with a new engine. Either way, I will wait until the game seems more or less finished, at least then I know what I am getting. I probably would be fine with a "mere" remaster as well.

Oh, and at first I though this thread is about the current System Shock Enhanced which is already on GOG, and I was afraid NDS had somehow borked that project. The enhanced version is still fine, yes? Phew...

I am in the camp of those who preferred the Unity version over the Unreal edition, so this return to basics is a good move in my eyes.

Exactly. Another example of the loudest minority getting what they want.

But it's also another example of mismanagement of Kickstarter funds. This entire switching the engine back and forth was a huge waste of time and money - and they only have a limited amount of the latter. So this back and forth really doesn't inspire confidence.

That being said, I did like the demo and I backed the project. So I hope they finish the game some time. But probably they'll have to team up with some publisher after all because they will run out of funds. We'll see.
