kalirion: It's famous for the large amounts of snow it receives, and yet in the last twelve years this is the first time the temperature got below 0? Or does he mean zero F instead of C? But where the hell in the U.S. outside of Alaska could it possible be below 0F in October? And if it's Alaska, then there's no way it hasn't been below 0F in the last 12 years.

Yeah, Celsius would be really messed up. :P
Try Kelvin.

Ok, maybe you live on top of a mountain or something. I still don't see how anywhere in the continental U.S. the lowest temperature of last 12 years would be in the Fall rather than Winter.

hairy_mole: Hello all,

I'm Using
OS Windows 7
Graphics GeForce GT 730
Memory DDR3 12 GB
CPU Amd FX 8320-E

The Suffering keeps freezing up on me. I just installed it today. When it freezes the pointer disappears and I then have to hit alt-ctrl-del. I tried to change some of the graphics in "options", and got a bit futher in the game and then it froze.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Enderlein4: Use the newest IndirectSound Version from https://www.indirectsound.com/downloads.html and don't allow 3D Soundbuffer or EAX in the Sound Setup of the Game (before first Launch, after you can hold shift, right click the Game.exe, open, the Setup will Popup again).
Also use newest Version of the AiO Patch https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/1229-the-suffering-series-aio-patch/

Other Soundfix like Creative ALchemy will only work if you got a Creative Soundcard. If you have a Realtek Chip like me on your Mainboard it's useless.
Disabled both sound options and Still hanging every 10min. This game is unplayable for me. Can we request for support?

Have you tried set cpu affinity?
Everytime I started the game I set it to only use CPU 0 and everything worked fine.
There's also a unofficial patch at PCGamingWiki

Might be worth giving it a try
The whole point of gog was to avoid having to do that.

I agree. Still, Win 98 / XP games are usually the ones more susceptible to have issues with modern PCs, specially CPU, GPU and Sound related.

I could've just pointed out the game specific area, that also has a topic about that patch HERE, instead just suggested the user to give it a try before contacting support.

DIDn't Work. Tried the patch but lost all the progress so far. The community patch even allows you to run in Window mode and select resolution. What the hell GOG. I am going to revert back and play for 10min each time before it crashes so that I don't loose the progress. Wish I knew about the patch earlier.

Have you also tried running in compatability mode?
I highly recommend using the patch, even if you do lose some progress (unless you already had an entire playthrough or two in, in which case maybe forget about the patch), as it does solve many issues these games have. If you want to install The Suffering: Ties That Bind while still having The Suffering installed at the same time, the patch is pretty much mandatory, because of engine overlapping stuff that makes the first game unplayable due to graphics issues (unless you enjoy messing around with the registry, which is the other way to fix it, if you don't want to use the patch).

Other than using the patch, I also run Process Lasso, a handy tool that optimizes your CPU on the fly, great for older games that have CPU affinity/priority issues (not just The Suffering; Process Lasso also helps immensely with Soul Reaver 2, Blood Omen 2 or even Bastion, all of which have affinity issues). It will still freeze sometimes, but you can put in three or four hours straight without worrying about freezes or crashes to desktop.

Thanks Guys for the help. I managed to finish the campaign Yesterday without the patch. It was annoying but still. I am installing the Second game, "Ties that bound", and will install the patch right away.

Appreciated! thx for the assist.

XP SP2 fixed it for me, was freezing, right after your first moral choice, just left the Death House part of the prison with no issues... well besides AI kinda acting funny, but it is an old game
