PaterAlf: Yes, but shouldn't the number of freebies be in line with the limited number of games for sale during the Insomnia sale? How can they run out of freebies without a serious miscalculation on their side?
avatar
moonshineshadow: Well the problem is that you get more freebies when buying tons of games. Because of this weird system which reduces the number of games bought for getting a freebie. When they set the number of freebies they probably thought that the sales would be spread out to more people, so less freebies handed out.
Which is why making assumptions is stupid. :P

Because the number of games required to unlock a freebie isn't static. It only takes 9 after the first freebie, then 8 for another freebie, etc.

If it always took 10 for each, then sure, they should be able to go "Total games / 10 = Needed freebies". But when some people only unlock the first freebie, some unlock down to 5 games per freebie, some keep unlocking after reaching 5 per freebie, and some never unlock the first? The math is a little trickier, if not impossible.

Neverfree: Stronghold any good?
Yes it is. Hanv't played the new one, but both Stronghold 1 and Stronghold Crusader 1 are great games. We played them on Lan Parties all the time.

The_Blog: Last insomnia sales I got lik 8 freebies. I think my karma meter would be depleted anyway :P
avatar
Habanerose: And you are still alive after that >_< (must have hardly slept, I assume, unless they literally threw them out of the windows)
I slept about 10 hours in 5 days.
But I also gifted like 30 games so Karma was on my side :P

Tonnemaker: I got Tales From the Borderlands for my free game. I hope it's good - I probably won't get to it for a while, though.
It is really good. Can fully recommend it. Very funny, great characters. :)

The math could be easy, if they played it safe and divided by 5. :P

Konrad: *psst*

Insider tip: we just added a bunch of new games and freebies to the rotation, but it's looking like we're gonna to run out of free copies not too long from now.

Hard to say exactly when, but if you're super-close these might be the last couple of hours to score that freebie.
avatar
LynetteC: That's probably why my freebie was Reus when other people scored Witcher 3!! :-/

Anyone need a Reus code?
if you're still giving away the Reus code, may I please have it? :)

From the promo's FAQ:

"Keep in mind that the stock of free games is limited. However unlikely, it's possible they may run out. Additionally, only games that are part of the Insomnia Sale lineup count towards your total. "

I thought of that, but I'm pretty sure you can still do the math. Of course it is based on assumptions. For example x% of buyers buy more than 10 games, y% buy more than 19 games, z% of buyers buy more than 27 games.

It's not that they do an Insomnia sale for the first time. They should know the average numbers. In the end you calculate a bonus number of freebies to be sure and it shouldn't be possible to run out of free games.
Thank you W3 for letting me go poop. <3

That works great. Until a couple of power buyers keep buying games to get extra freebies before all of the other buyers purchase the requisite 45 games to get their first 5/game freebie.

They probably made their best guesses. The problem is that they are still guessing/estimating, and actual people make take unexpected actions. As this guy highlights, GOG thinks they have enough freebies to cover everyone, but they can't guarantee it.

In addition, don't forget publishers have to supply the codes. They may ask for 1000 and the publisher only gives them 500.

I don't and was carrying my laptop around the house yesterday... even into the bathroom. Was wishing I had a smartphone

I'm not sure if the paragraph was there right from the beginning or if they added it just a few minutes ago.

I don't complain if the sale ends some hours after they run out of freebies, but if it goes on for days without any free games, it was a serious or even deliberate miscalculation on their side.
