It looks like The Sinking City was removed from Gamesplanet. I been waiting for the game to go on sale since it's a DRM free version. Now we need this game on GOG more than ever.

Damn. What a shame.

What's The Sinking City? And what's Gamesplanet?

Gamesplanet is website that sales mostly game keys. But it had few DRM free games.
Thankfully I picked it up from them back in Jan 22 when Sachys posted that Gamesplanet were offering it at 85% off at the time, and I snapped it up as quick as you like. I've downloaded it since then, but have not got round to actually playing it, yet...
Either the rights issues are being resolved, or this game has just entered eternal limbo

Okay, so what's special about The Sinking City on Gamesplanet? Was it actually a DRM-free game?
If not, why not just buy it on Steam for the exact same 85% discount???

Yes. It was the only place to get the DRM-free version.
Ok, so... what exactly is Gamesplanet? I mean, they are selling GOG keys, and as far as I know there are no legit third party GOG key sellers (except for maybe a couple games on Humble for some reason). But they also sell some games DRM free? As what, offline installers like GOG? Is it a legit store?

Gamesplanet is 100% a legit store guaranteed for sure.

Forgive me my ignorance. I didn't know about this game before or its legal "situation". Here's what I found out:

First, I looked at the Gamesplanet website. They actually sell games for a variety of "activation" targets: Epic, GOG, Microsoft, Rockstar, Steam, Ubisoft, and a few others. Some games are also provided as just downloads from their own servers, which I assume now are those DRM-free games mentioned?

"The Sinking City" is a very special case, though, as there is a dispute going on between the developer (Frogwares) and a french publisher (Nacon). A previous version of the game (by Nacon) was pulled from Steam and other platforms. Then the DRM-free version (by Frogwares) was uploaded to Gamesplanet as a temporary solution. But now It seems all reverted: removed from Gamesplanet, back on Steam.
(I haven't had the time yet to read up on the outcome of the recent lawsuit.)

Edit:
Quoting myself: >> why not just buy it on Steam for the exact same 85% discount???
Answer: Do not buy it on Steam because the shady stuff is far from over yet. Steam comments are full of warnings that Nacon is allegedly trying to make a quick buck off of this game.

(Edit 2: clarifications)

It's on Steam. I don't think the devs get any money from that version sadly, but the game is legally available. The Gamesplanet release was just unique for supposedly supporting the devs and also being a DRM free download.

I wanted a full DRM-free version. Not big on buying games from Steam with there DRM or jumping through hoops. To make the game DRM-free, which is not always guaranteed to work.

I am not surprised there is a dispute when the Ukrainian developer team goes to call themselves "frogwares". No wonder the French publisher takes an issue with that.
i bought this game on Gamesplanet like 10 months ago.
So, i can confirm this : The Sinking City on Gamesplanet was 100% DRM-Free. You have a 11-part download with the windows installers.

It was removed by Frogwares, apparently.

I reached out to GamesPlanet last month via email and Twitter. They said it was as Frogwares request. I have been asking Frogwares for an update since, but they refuse to comment.

I would say they're either working on a remaster (But why pull the old one until the remaster is done?) or Nacon won the dispute and Frogwares are no longer allowed to sell it.
