snowkatt: never cared for blizzard
a one trick pony with bland boring grindy games

Elenarie: Diablo 3 = 30+ million copies sold
Overwatch = 20+ million players in less than a year
Starcraft 2 = most successful RTS of all time
Hearthstone = most successful CCG of all time
Warcraft = most successful MMO of all time

Not a one trick pony, I'd say.
Under which standards is Starcraft 2 most succesfull RTS of all time?

He just listed 5 completely different genres they've worked on.

You're just putting your fingers in your ears and yelling "LALALALALA I'M NOT LISTENING!".
Does anyone remember The Lost Vikings? Also a Blizzard game.

If the data cited on Wikipedia is to be trusted (and I'd love to see more accurate sales figures...maybe from NPD?), StarCraft has sold 11 million copies, and StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty has sold 6 million copies. The next comparable games sales-wise are the original Populous and Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War, which have sold 4 million copies each. The original C&C and Red Alert both have sold 3 million copies.

Unless I (or someone else) can find better data, I'd take all of that with a grain of salt though.

Perhaps the other significant qualifier would be the current active playerbase, though I have no idea if anyone could get publicly available and comparable data among StarCraft vs. other major RTS franchises.

wait you mean the games i listed in the first place ?!
no way !

but hey the fact that blizzard mostly did dungeon crawling grind fests and rts games in more then 20 years
and overwatch is the first actual new genre they did since 2004 doesn tmatter right ?

You're doing it again. You are conveniently forgetting WoW and Hearthstone.

You don't have to like Blizzard, there's plenty of reasons not to, but don't invent reasons that don't exist.

Age of Empires series (20 million sold)
Total War series (20 million sold)

Starcraft (1998) itself is the best selling RTS, but Starcraft 2 is not that successful.

snowkatt: they were actually decent once ;p
Ahem, the John Madden football games for the Genesis are a shining example.

Im talking money,so I doubt SC2 is the most succesfull. If SC1 sold more,I dont see how current active playerbase is relevant

Start Craft 2 sold a fuck ton of copies in Asia, even though it tanked in the US and Europe.

I'd say it could be very relevant as a game's long-term success could also be affected by the strength and size of its online playerbase, especially if we're talking about a game/genre marketing on the strength of its online multiplayer and online multiplayer community.

Starcraft (1998) itself is the best selling RTS, but Starcraft 2 is not that successful.
Are you talking about individual titles though, or sales taken across the whole series? In the figures I found above I was comparing individual games only, though you could argue both ways if you were to take StarCraft 2's sales as a combination of WoL + HotS + LotV, or on an individual basis.

when did the slide downards began and we ended up with the monolithic monster we go now ?

in other words when did EA turn to shit ?
SecuRom 7, That is when it started to slide in my opinion.

CARRiON.FLOWERS: Around 2007-2009 they actually took a lot of chances and devoted time to new IPs like Mass Effect, Dead Space, and Mirror's Edge.
They promoted those, they were made by other companies that they gobbled up to try and make themselves relevant again, IMHO

I think it's hard to say the exact year, because it differs from franchise to franchise. For NFS, I think it would be the year when they released NFS: Carbon, which was in 2006 if I am not mistaken.
