I have been informed of a concern about the definition of "grand jury", since this practice doesn't happen in some parts of Europe, so let me explain:
A grand jury is a jury called together to determine whether the defendant should be held to trial or not. The jury number is not set (it actually normally exceeds twelve) and does not have a job of determining the innocence or guilt of the defendant. Sufficient evidence to hold the defendant on trial would be including, but not limited to:
- Lying in testimony
- Evidence which suggests guilt
- Actions which suggest guilt
- Inconsistent testimony
- Suspicion of a crime of any sort, whether related or unrelated to the case at hand
