Will the new Myst work on windows xP?
I assume you're trolling, but on the off chance you're not, read the system requirements.

Sometimes a game will work on a previous windows platform. That was the reason for my question. Not trolling.

Thanks

No.
Requires DirectX11 while DirectX9 is last supported on Windows XP.
Also requires 64Bit OS which only would be achieved with special 64 Bit XP Edition which is/was not commonly used at all.

Also most likely any hardware still running a XP machine would be to weak to run the game anyway (putting driver support and such aside)
Also XP aint a "previous" windows platform but an ancient OS.

There are lots of old timers with old PCs enticed by these "old school" releases who don't want to pay to upgrade to play them. My faither-in-law is one of them.
It's been my experience that any installer file that has the GOG Galaxy code included will not install or will install but not open on my XP boxes. I can install my old game backups with no issues but if I download and try an installer for the same game with the Galaxy code included it fails due to Galaxy not supporting XP.

This is a new release so I "assume" it will include Galaxy code and will not run on XP.

This is just my experience with the newer installers/updates for older games so other community members may have more info. I have not run into this issue with Win 7 up boxes. I haven't tried new installers on XP boxes in several months so there could be changes to the Galaxy code . . . but I doubt it.

Even if we were to hypothetically sweep aside Galaxy and speak of it as a standalone game, let's take a moment to think about this, logically.

1) The game is obviously built using a 64-bit build kit. This automatically shuts out most WIndows XP use cases; especially since 32 bit has a hard 4 GB limit.
2) Windows XP is 20 years old. That's ancient for operating systems.
3) I can't imagine any GPU modern enough to run the new Myst has anything resembling compatibility with WinXP. Same for any CPU. Remember, CPUs were still single core when XP was new.
4) Even if you managed to beat all these limits, there is a DirectX11 minimum requirement.
5) Ignoring even the DirectX requirement, I can't imagine the remaining required libraries having ever been compiled for Windows XP.

At this point, WIndows XP is a historical relic. You should not, and there is literally no reason to be attempting to use it to run a new game 20 years newer than it is.
Thanks for all your comments. I guess the consensus is that the new Myst will not run on xP.

Yes. Win XP is limited to DirectX 9. Vista added DirectX 10 and W7 added DirectX 11. Myst uses DirectX 12 by default but can be made to run on DirectX 11, so Windows 7 is the oldest OS it will run on.

The system requirements aren't always correct.

They give you a good idea though. Read the system requirements for the new Myst. Is that anything that would work with XP even if you got lucky and could fudge a couple of things? Nope.

sadly that comment goes both ways.... during the hollidays i had the pleasure of having a very high cored cpu over to look after and... well lets say that i'm buying one at my earliest opportunity for the strategy department ( or any gaming department for that matters )

Sorry, does it mean that latest Myst (2021) will run under Windows 7 (x64)? I haven't purchased it yet.

Yes. As explained here, it defaults to DirectX12 and will crash. But if you start it with the -dx11 command line switch, it will work under W7 by forcing DX11.

Thank you, I had no idea that a specific thread exists for Win 7 compatibility games.
