grimwerk: The first two guesses share the four colors in bold. According to the first guess, the final answer can include at most 3 of those 4 colors. So at least one of those colors must be incorrect. As one of the bold colors is incorrect, red and yellow must be part of the five colors we know in the second guess.

We also know that black is incorrect, and that there is a maximum of one purple peg.
Ah, got you. It's been a long time since I played mastermind and the logic behind some of the guesses etc. Is eluding me.
Thanks for explaining :)

adaliabooks: ...
I used to play with my Grandad when I was young. He would leave pegs out and treat 'empty' as an extra color. My son saw Mastermind in a shop a few days ago and expressed an interest. (Without any prompting from me!) I meant to go searching for a set online. I'll do it now.

Me and my brother used to play a lot as kids.

So, we're now at:

purple green aqua purple black blue
Answer: 0 black, 3 white

yellow purple green red blue aqua
Answer: 1 black, 4 white

green purple red yellow white aqua
Answer: 0 black, 4 white

So we know blue (presumably?) should be in the final set along with yellow and red.
There is no white or black and no more than 1 purple (which isn't the second peg).
And we need to lose one of either green, purple or aqua.

I agree. I suspect the unconventional aqua will disappear. I'm expecting one of the known colors to appear twice (not purple) or an orange peg to appear. Just guessing, though.

Well this next guess doesn't include aqua (but it doesn't include a lot of the other colours either) so we may be able to judge that.
I did not plan to give hints, but I'll think, it's needed atm:

Please read my opening post!

Those running Windows could try the following: Open a console window (cmd.exe) and type the command "color /?" - you'll understand.

Aqua

and without cmd help :)
4. guess: blue yellow green blue yellow aqua

Answer: 2 black, 1 white

I'm viewing Star Wars I-VI these days in preparation for part VII, will look tomorrow for the next suggestions...

Ah, I see I didn't read carefully earlier. Sorry.

What we know so far:

purple green aqua purple black blue
Answer: 0 black, 3 white

yellow purple green red blue aqua
Answer: 1 black, 4 white

green purple red yellow white aqua
Answer: 0 black, 4 white

blue yellow green blue yellow aqua
Answer: 2 black, 1 white

Confirmed colours: Red, Yellow, Blue
There is no white or black and no more than 1 purple (which isn't the second peg). Possibly only one blue and one yellow (though I'm not sure that last guess does rule out a second blue or yellow)
And we need to lose one of either green, purple or aqua.
Last result suggests we have 1 purple, but it's not guaranteed.
