rampancy: Any word on the latest Army Men trilogy? After a long and unsuccessful battle to get the last game I tried working (Interstate '82) I'm a little hesitant to buy this without any feedback from my fellow WINE gurus.
avatar
te_lanus: I've only tried Army Men (1) (which I dl illegally since it's not for sale here, but do own it on CD) and it will run, tried bootcamp and the grenade launcher part can't be completed, as the grenades flies of randomly, and there are times that it's hard to make out if your army man.
Hmm, so just to clarify, the issue with grenades and the graphical glitches don't occur in WINE?

it is happening with wine 1.9.16 & 1.9.18 (and I tested the GOG version).

Hmm, have you tried running it with ddr=gdi?

It solves the grenade problems somewhat, the grenade now do what you tell it, but it'll miss the target :P

That's weird...do you mean to say that grenade impacts aren't rendered properly (which means it's another renderer/graphics issue) or that hit detection doesn't work for grenades? If it's the latter it may be symptomatic of a deeper issue between this game and WINE.

immi101: some more hacking around on Interstate 76.
The attached patch limits the fps to 30. That prevents any gamebreaking "I can't make that jump" cases (or the AI not making a jump). At least as far as I have played.
Amazing stuff! I will be very happy to test the patch :) Here is the pastebin link to the wine crash backtrace if you still need it.
Did anyone have good experience with running Rebel Galaxy in Wine? I consider buying it, but reports in WineHQ aren't encouraging.

I haven't ran it in the latest version of Wine and the last time I ran it was in Wine 1.7 something or other and I had some crashes but again it was some really old version of Wine. The good news is that the game has a DX9 mode :)

I'll have a whack at it soon though to see if anything's changed :)

Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 750Ti
Graphics driver & version: Proprietary 370.28
Wine version(s) tested: Wine Staging 1.9.18 via PlayOnLinux

Install notes: Requires d3dx9
Before playing run winecfg and then undo the override for d3dx9_31 (set it to builtin) - this isn't strictly necessary but without it PlayOnLinux will complain that the game has crashed when you exit it.
Installer hangs towards the end & needs to be terminated
Run the game from/create a shortcut for "nwn2main.exe"
How well does it run: Almost perfect so far
Details: Did a very quick test as someone else was asking about it so have only played briefly. Tested starting a new game (main campaign) + wandering about a little & there was no sign of any major problems. Don't use anti-aliasing as having it enabled causes rendering issues with the sky and don't use CSMT as it causes problems with video playback. Tested with virtual desktop enabled.

interesting, it crashes in the part of the wine code which does the win98 emulation (krnl386.exe16). Unfortunately your wine lacks debug symbols, so you don't see in which function it crashes. There are probably some WINEDEBUG channels that give some more information, but I don't know them off the top of my head.
Anyway, I'll be gone the next weeks, vacation/traveling, so I'll just put this on pause for now.

But if you find some time to test the patch, I'd appreciate the feedback. :)
At some point I still want to test this if it works on windows as well, and post it in the interstate forum, where it might be easier to find for others ;)

Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit
Kernel version: 4.13.0-32
Graphics card: AMD RX 480 8GB
Graphics driver & version: Open source, with Mesa 17.3.2 from Padoka's stable Mesa PPA
Wine version(s) tested: Wine 3.0 (with CSMT enabled)

Install notes: Just install & play (the widescreen fix needs an override though; see below).
Run the game from/create a shortcut for "TOD.exe"
How well does it run: Perfect
Details: Played for a while, there's no sign of any issues & it seems to run great so far.

Widescreen support:
A widescreen fix is available here: https://thirteenag.github.io/wfp#tod
Extract it into the game's directory, then run winecfg and add an override for dinput8 (native, builtin). It will use the desktop (or virtual desktop) resolution by default, or you can manually set the resolution by editing "TotalOverdose.WidescreenFix.ini" in the scripts directory.

Wine wrapper
I have put together a Linux Wine wrapper for this game. For more information, see the release thread in the game's forum: https://www.gog.com/forum/total_overdose_a_gunslingers_tale_in_mexico/total_overdose_for_linux

The physics still sometimes feels a little bit odd and the AI acts retarded at times, but I'm not sure if this is buggy behavior or simply a game from the 90s ;)
The patch also disable the funky cpu speed measurement, so no need to run it under win98.
Just tried it with 1.9.19, and I am now stages after the big jump, tried it with 1.9.18 and it almost made it, so 1.9.19 with your patch and I'm able to clear the jump without problem

Kernel version: 4.4.0-36
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 750Ti
Graphics driver & version: Proprietary 370.28
Wine version(s) tested: Wine Staging 1.9.18 via PlayOnLinux, CrossOver 15.2.0

Install notes: Requires directmusic (install "Direct Music" in CrossOver)
If using PlayOnLinux, run the game from/create a shortcut for "Gothic2.exe"
How well does it run: Quite well
Details: Vdfs32e.exe almost always crashes on start. Despite this the game still runs and appears to be fully playable, although I've only played through the beginning of the game so far & it crashed once so it's probably a good idea to save regularly. Tested with virtual desktop enabled. I strongly recommend Wine Staging for this game as it crashes frequently with regular Wine, but don't enable CSMT as it'll cause the game to freeze on exit just like it does with Gothic.

I have tested older versions of Wine to see when this crash with Vdfs32e.exe started occurring and the latest version I can find where it does not crash is 1.7.30 (videos are unskippable when using this version of Wine though) - this issue started occurring as of Wine 1.7.31.

Open source engine reimplementation "REGoth":
There's still a lot of work needed but it's worth keeping an eye on: https://github.com/degenerated1123/REGoth

Wine version(s) tested: Wine 1.9.19 via PlayOnLinux, CrossOver 15.2.0

Install notes: Requires d3dx9_40 (install DirectX 9 Modern in CrossOver)
If using PlayOnLinux, run the game from/create a shortcut for "Gothic3.exe"
How well does it run: Almost perfect
Details: Have only played for a few hours or so. You may need to restart the game after changing display resolution as it might not change correctly. There's a bit of stutter in new areas as they load but it runs fine after that. There's also a text rendering issue which can make some things difficult to read & PlayOnLinux complains about the game crashing when you quit. Tested with virtual desktop enabled.

I initially tested with Wine Staging, but the text rendering issue is even worse using that (whether CSMT is enabled or not) and it's bad enough to make some text unreadable.
