Hello,
Some games have titles with "The" in. For example, The 11th Hour. In Title ordering, it would list "The 11th Hour", but not "11th Hour, The". The reason I'm asking is because the game, "The 7th Guest" is listed as "7th Guest, The" in title ordering. I was hoping that "The 11th Hour" would be renamed to "11th Hour, The" for title ordering.

Yes, I'm aware of tag assignment. But it looked strange in title ordering for 7th Guest and 11th Hour.

On the other side, the reason I liked that way is because I take screenshots of my game collection from A to Z and keep for my records.

Just a though.

The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour would start with numerals if you suffixed 'The'. That's a grammatical no-no. If the games were called The Seventh Guest and The Eleventh Hour, then they would be catalogued as Seventh Guest, The and Eleventh Hour, The.

There is no catalogue-wide standard on how titles starting with "the" are handled, unfortunately. in some cases, it appears after the full title, in some cases before; and in at least one or two cases (which I can't remember), they relocated "the" so it falls after the main title, but before a subordinate title or descriptor (e.g.: "Pants, The: Journey to My'Assia"), which is...baffling.

well the problem is the following:
a lot of inconsistency in the naming/tagging in catalog

i dont have the ratio but there are many "the something" games under letter "T" and many "something, the" games in their respective first word's initial

also, talking about inconsistency and rather unconvenient/lack of logic in namings, i sadly could point out the "naming" of downloaded folders of each games as well

i maintain an offline arhchive of my gog library though just gog downloader (please, refrain yourself of even bothering me with the "galaxy" thing, thanx you)
and i could cut/past a dir command output of root folder here and you would certainly be as puzzled as me

You mean like "Last Federation, The - The Lost Technologies" and "Vanishing of Ethan Carter, The - Collector's Edition Upgrade"?
I find those a lot easier to read than "Legend of Heroes: Trails in The Sky, The", but I also see the similarities.

I prefer the former two as the initial "The" has been placed after the game title but before the separator to the add-on title, but they are also similar in that while the latter has a subtitle, it is not an add-on so the same "The" is place after the title of the main game.

Personally, I would sort the latter as "Legend of Heroes, The: Trails in The Sky" as GOG's way looks to me like it should be "Legend of Heroes: The Trails in The Sky".

Update:

GOG just somehow fixed this issue. "7th Guest, The" was renamed to "The 7th Guest" which fit nicely with "The 11th Hour" in title ordering.

Unfortunately there is no standardization in naming, I think it is up to the publisher how it gets named/listed and they may do it in a way that is seemingly random to us at times. :/

About the only way anyone could likely have any effect on having it changed, is if people with severe diagnosed OCD were to step forward and claim how deeply it offends them and that their rights are being trampled upon, and start a new OCD Matters campaign treating the whole issue as a matter of sensitive political correctness over an important issue that is "overlooked", justifying the movement as a means to bring awareness to the public over the condition. GOG and/or the other companies may want to back away in fear to be as neutral as possible and just make changes to avoid being caught in the crossfire.

Other than that though, the only way it's likely to ever make any sense I believe is if someone publishes a Galaxy compatible game client from the reverse engineered protocol which has more advanced sensible sorting capabilities with a variety of options.

This post is meant to be both serious and humourous at the same time. :)

That is literally how it's supposed to work. You relocate initial "the" in one title, you do it in all of them: uniformity. That's not really how the title is supposed to be read or spoken, mind you; it's just a way to prevent there being a ridiculously long section in any long, alphabetized lists of titles where there's just a huge wall of The's. (The same applies to titles staring with A and An.)

One could order titles by ignoring initial articles, but still leaving them at the fronts of titles, but it might cause confusion for some people. (When I make an alphabetized list that's going to be solely for my own use, this is how I generally do it, though.)

GOG can set proper titles as they like to. To put all of "The" as suffix would require GOG to rename all of games with "The". So, I don't blame GOG that "The" is prefix for games with "The". I understand that GOG has to be neutral for people because there are too many opinions on how titles should appear. Again, it would be nice if GOG add a feature to sort our games, but this is just my opinion.

However, for me and some people, we can categorize games' titles the way we liked offline. For example, I would create a folder called "7th Guest, The (GOG)" then put all of files from 7th Guest's download menu and zip that folder and store it in my offline archive.

One used to be able to manually sort one's library, but that feature was removed a couple years ago during a redesign of the Account page.
You may be interested to know, though, that user adaliabooks made a user script that allows (among other things) manual sorting of one's library. I haven't used it, but tons of other users swear by it. :)

I just contacted support about this the other day. Interesting that they would switch to a preceding article with "The 7th Guest". Starting with numerals may be a grammatical no-no, but I'd say it's an acceptable compromise. Messing up the sort order by starting with an article affects way more titles. While it's nice that "The 7th Guest" and "The 11th Hour" are now grouped together, that's really a separate issue - one that GOG promised would be getting a fix "soon"... nearly two years ago: <i>"Soon (...) we will be changing the way that titles from a series are ordered (i.e. Broken Sword should always show up before Broken Sword 2)."</i>

Of course, GOG can set titles as they like, but that's not what they've been doing. As has been pointed out, several titles already have articles at the end, so it's clear there just are no guidelines on how to set them. Whether they chose to go with prefixes (which would be stupid) or suffixes, many titles would have to be renamed. They just need to make a choice and stick with it.

Another related issue, by the way, are titles that start with the "author's" name. We have "Colonization, Sid Meier's" and "Locomotion, Chris Sawyer's" - but on all other titles (including other Sid Meier games) the author's name is at the beginning.

It's too bad Adalia Fundamentals only sorts the library, not the catalog.

The Settlers series has been struck bad by this issue:
"Settlers: Rise Of An Empire - Gold Edition, The",
"The Settlers 2: Gold Edition" and
"Settlers 3: Ulitmate Edition", dropping the "The" entirely.

This shows another issue: The inconsistency how things like "Xyz Edition" are added to a title. After a colon or after an hyphen? Or nothing at all, like in "Guild Gold Edition, The"?

If GOG is too lazy or not able (maybe because of contracts with the publisher or some legal hassle like that) to finde an adequate system on its own, then maybe they should give us the ability to give custom titles to our library entries and together with manual sorting this problem would solved to every customers individual pleasure.

Tl;dr: Bring back manual sorting and the ability to name our games ourselve!
