I don't hate it, but I do find it largely pointless. I'd be for abolishing it.

Why do you want to abolish "it"?

We'd be fucked for a suitable replacement pronoun if we got rid of "it".

Context: It as in DST.

Breja: It's the exact opposite with me. What I hate is the day being an hour shorter. As if it wasn't short enough already in winter. It's not even five o'clock when it gets dark. Fuck that.
Over here it's dark around the same time. Don't like it either.

tinyE: Again, these are all 1st World Problems and I don't want anyone in this thread taking it too seriously. :P
I was overjoyed to read a few weeks ago that a Finnish EU parliament member (Heidi Hautala) is strongly campaigning and trying to abolish this stupid "dayligh saving" foolishness in the EU zone. Too bad Finland can't stop using it alone as some stupid stupid STOOOOOOOPID EU directive forces us to use it.

http://yle.fi/uutiset/3-7614318

So the madness has to stop in the whole EU zone before we can get rid of it. Heidi is from the Green Party (the tree huggers) for which I don't necessarily care that much overall... but at least in this case they are really in the good cause. If they promise to get rid of daylight saving, I'll promise to vote for the Green Party at least in next two elections.

When she was interviewed about this, she mentioned that when she was discussing with a member of the EU commission about it and finally asked what are the logical reasons to have daylight savings... the EU commissioner just gave her a blank face, he couldn't come up with any reasons why changing clocks twice a year is such a damn great idea. It just is what it is apparently, status quo.

Full support from me! Two thumbs up, right up in the ass!

But tiny, does it make a difference where you are, it just snows.:)
:):)
I hate it wholeheartedly. The problem today is that people instead of waking up at 5am, wake at 8, start work at 9, so it's often dark when you leave work.

Have you guys tried to agree with your bosses that you could go to work one (or two, or four) hours earlier, and also leave earlier? Then there would be no need for everyone to change time twice a year just so that you can have one more "light hour" in the evening.

Or maybe even some night shift work, then you'd have all the daylight hours in your use when you get home? Become a nurse/policeman/security guard and say that you want all the night shifts?

My main complaint is the shifting of time twice a year, more than in what timezone we live in. Albeit, I would prefer that 12am would be around the same time when the sun is highest, and 12pm when the night is darkest, as that just makes more sense.

Whether an EU commisioner could come up with a reason is neither here nor there, but there are reasons. Feel free to read about the arguments made by both sides here:

HereForTheBeer: Yes, mixed with Great Pyrenees. Weird combo. 85 pound herding / watch dog. But super-sweet. Just wish she'd sleep in, hence the dislike for DST.
If "not sleeping in" is your only issue, you're probably a good dog owner. Does she show any herding dog behaviour? I used to have a rat while living with a Border Collie. Dog used to sit in front of the cage (for hours, if we'd let her) and just stare at him, making sure he didn't go anywhere.

OT, I don't care about daylight savings either way, actually. I don't have a life so it doesn't affect me, but I can see how it would irritate people who have shit to do.

HereForTheBeer: Not a fan, and would prefer to keep the "later" hours.

Got a dog who stirs when it gets light outside, and tells us it's time to go outside by making this "uhWEEEEEE"
yawn about every minute or so until we drag ourselves out of bed. Doesn't matter much during the week but on the weekend...

Among other reasons that also probably seem petty in the great scheme of things.
Got a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross that makes silly noises when she wants/needs something, she's horrendous when she knows she's about to go out for a walk or when she knows it's tea time! Paws and hollers.

That article claims that there are energy saving benefits and the opponents simply call them "inconclusive", but even the EU commission itself agrees nowadays that any energy saving benefits of daylight saving are miniscule, if even that.

That is probably why the EU commissioner didn't try to claim (anymore) that it saves energy. The only benefit I keep hearing is indeed that some people like to get out of work "one hour earlier" in order to get one more hour of sunlight in the evening.

Also as said, I think these are two different discussions (albeit related):

- shifting time twice a year, between daylight saving time and normal time.

- in which timezone each country decides to live (e.g. I recall when Russia abolished daylight saving time shifting, at first they had daylight saving (summer time) all the time, but later changed back to normal time (for the whole year).

I've mentioned it before but the time shifting is a true pain in the ass for me when trying to agree on recurring international meetings with e.g. Indians (who never shift time) or Americans (who shift it on a different date than EU, as this thread demonstrates). Twice a year always the same problem (actually, four times with the Americans because they shift time on a different date):

"Sorry we can't participate in that weekly meeting anymore because now it overlaps with another meeting here. Could you move it by one hour?"

"Sorry I can't because then it would overlap with another recurring meeting I have at that time."

Maybe this wasn't much of a problem back in the 1800s or early 1900s when everything was more local, but now we live in a global world.

Daylight Savings Time should be abolished. The whole "it saves energy" argument is a load of horse manure. Plus, it messes with my sleep patterns.
Like a true NORD I recognize the True TIME... this is the time of our forefathers.. the time of Kings...

but for real though timezones and DST it was all a way to force people to work longer.. mainly rail-workers and farmers... in this connected world Time Zones and DST are uneeded in any fashion...

A train needs not know the time nor does it need daylight to function... a farmer does not care if its 5am or 6am when the sun comes up... or if the sun sets at 7pm or 8pm.. the farmer adjusts his schedule to the planet not to a clock...

Current timekeeping methods are completely irrelevant in todays world. We should form a universal time that exists in one continuous loop... so 0900 means sunrise for me while 2100 means sunrise for someone else...
