justanoldgamer: I saw my doctor Tuesday. My pressure is 5 above good (I can never remember the precise numbers) and I've gain 10 pounds since I started seeing her 2 or 3 years ago. Well 20 really, I dropped 10 and then gained 20.
She told me to cut salt and beer. My main unnecessary source of salt are chips (crisps for people in England) and that is easy enough to forego. Beer is tougher though, I do like my beer. I won't cut that 100% but I will cut down form about 7 L a week to at least half of that.
I did my grocery shopping online this morning (first time, it's a lot less "anxiogène" for someone like me) and wherever I could (meaning what is offered and what I can pay) I chose low fat / low salt/ low sugar alternatives. I am aware that when something announces it is low fat/sugar/salt then the two others are often higher to preserve the good taste so I try looking out for that.
I'm cheating on the beer tonight but I prefer going 2 or 3 days without then going everyday with just one. I'll manage my beer intake like I manage my internet traffic, I'm a youtube and Netflix addict without unlimited bandwidth.
I do wish someone made a low calorie beer that taste great. If the progress in that department had been as great as the progress in video/sound compression then obesity would be history. Taste is a sort of data, isn't it? We view video data with our eyes and can compress that. We hear audio data with our ears and can compress that. People in biochemistry should really get on the compression business too and increase taste per calorie.
Edit: Corrected a than for then.
Do you like flavored beers? Try something with ginger or grapefruit (mead or hard cider are also nice alternatives). Those tend to be lighter ales... plus you'll get a few goodies of vitamins from any additions to the brew. I don't see why drinking 1 or 2 ciders or ales once in a while should be a big deal.
And for the chips, try Triscuit all wheat crackers. They make them in garlic, veggie, and dill and sea salt. The dill Triscuits are really good. They are low in calories and salt... and they taste just like pickles so they're very good added with a light sandwich. I was surprised how much I liked them.
