Elmofongo: Saychs am I the only one who feels annoyed when people reference things I never seen or heard of?
To me I read and listen and watch people on the internet occsionally referenced things that I personally never heard of or watched.
For Example I have seen many references to Monthy Python, Orwell's 1984, and Lovecraftian things, and recently Idiocracy.
Like everytime a person talks in a political debate there is a good chance they reference Orwell.
When people talks about the scariest works of fiction ever they constantly reference Lovecraftian things even after they say Horror is subjective. And of course I have seen moviebob make reference to Lovecraft in his reviews.
To people like me its annoying because they expect everyone to know. I never grew up with Python, I never read Orwell or watched 1984 the movie, I question whether Lovecraft's writings is really scary.
You're thinking of axioms, ideas that cultures tend to look upon as being universal or generally agreed to. It is indeed subjective when it comes to preference or opinion. Is Lovecraft scary? I don't know. Pick up a tale or two and read 'em. There's no reason to be annoyed that many other people are universally mentioning something... especially when it's something you haven't dug into.
I find human beings capable of doing great things when it comes to influencing and inspiring each other. Look for humans that inspire you or uplift you. The ones that don't? Well, everyone might need a meat shield at any given time.
And always remember that many shits will not be given whether or not you do.
