Sachys: I could almost acept them forcing me to "upgrade" to win 8 or summat - but simply not offering the download with a key they have said is still valid is utter shit

I'll let you know how it goes - unless I become a Linux virgin and have to sacrifice to the mad lizard overlords! O_____k
Yeah, unfortunately OEM keys are only for that specific computer and thats why it is cheaper then retail to use it for preinstalling on all systems. It doesn't account for customers in your situation and is crappy of Microsoft to remove the source of official downloads of the ISOs for everyone.

Hopefully the backup on the mirror site checks out and you're able to get it activated. It is good to know that there is always an option to use linux as well incase of emergency and worth losing your virginity to the open source software. ;)

Well, thats the bollocks of it though - if it only accounts for that specific computer (and is confirmed by HP as still valid), that means both companies are fluffing people out of genuine downloads for having to d/l on a secondary system.
Still, another mate piped up - after emigrating to Oddstralia, his laptop was fubar due to baggage handlers. Same issue as me - microsoft issued him with a new key so will see.

As to linux... I HAD planned to put the (even) older laptop on that to see what was what, but its lack of photoshop realtime brushstroke rendering really puts it down in useability (got the currently broke laptop due to win 7 being good for that - along with the specific cpu - almost zero lag in regards to it). Still, if needs be - rather a high powered toaster than a lawnmower at least!

Well thats one positive sign so hopefully you will be able get a positive response from MS support as well if need be.

I certainly understand that it might not be as convenient to use if it affects your ability to work properly with photoshop. So again I hope the need doesn't arise to use it but yes something is better then nothing philosophy holds true in that case. Do let me know if you happen to require help with anything else and I will try to be of assistance if I'm able to. :)

I still need Lucy Liu's phone number!

Sachys: they do - but on inputting my product # only an old, obscure model shows up. only other thing they have is a link to digital river.
I would open a ticket/email/chat (whichever one they/you prefer) and try to get a human response from them if you haven't. Then you can tell them the link isn't working for you.

Sachys: what is the linux build like? (never used linux so no ideas o0n that front - and need photoshop cs3 to run smoothly for realtime brushstrokes - which it allegedly does not in linux O____o)
That build should do well, but it doesn't have anything special for Photoshop so it likely won't be any better than the others. Don't really know though. Inkscape should work fine.

Haha....unfortunately, I can't help with that conundrum. ;)

At least in EU/Germany this part of the licence went down the river per court - if you have licence youre entitled to install it once on any HW you have.
PS: if youre still in search for Win7 I would check a well known auctionsite
- original Win7 Pro 64 bit DVD plus licence 19-29 euro (from dell or fujitsu or ... - but nevertheless as stated above absolut legal!)
Well, I have changed the drives over, installed win 7 and now begin the long crawl of reinstalling stuff - starting with a never ending list of drivers etc.

on another note: one week on friday sees us celebrating ONE YEAR OF THE HERMIT CAVE!!!!!

Good to know, so I take it you were able to get Windows activated via MS support then. The reinstallation of drivers and other important softwares sure takes time, not to mention the plethora of system updates as well.
