Sachys: I could almost acept them forcing me to "upgrade" to win 8 or summat - but simply not offering the download with a key they have said is still valid is utter shit

Yeah, unfortunately OEM keys are only for that specific computer and thats why it is cheaper then retail to use it for preinstalling on all systems. It doesn't account for customers in your situation and is crappy of Microsoft to remove the source of official downloads of the ISOs for everyone. Hopefully the backup on the mirror site checks out and you're able to get it activated. It is good to know that there is always an option to use linux as well incase of emergency and worth losing your virginity to the open source software. ;)
