Dischord: Yes, different bases could give it a value, as could the x in another, but it still stands as a variable, not a literal value.
Man placed the corresponding values on each, and without a domain or range being identified in the initial premise, variable it is, thus anything :-) "A" could as easily stand for my neighbor's dog, as a number or value.
