Last Japanese movie I really liked was Phoenix Wright and I heard the director was actually acclaimed so that was neat, the film actually captured the tone of the games perfectly.

Heard also that Battle Royale is what Hunger Games primarily ripped off among other things

Yeah the influence is more than evident - though hunger games did take quite a different path with it.
Battle Royale is a lot more... realistic / feasible / recogniseably our world - and more disturbing because of it.

Haha...it sure is, we used to play it in school during a break from our computer course classes and I was never able to last long in that game. They should have called it Dangerously Stupid Dave. :P

This one is particularly shitty - remember, it's made by John Romero. There's a bunch of fake platforms and places where you can get shot from off screen. Also, the platforming is pretty wonky.
