I like to discuss the Godfather movies. Perticularly the first film.
I sort of have a problem with the trilogy as of late in that I think that Corleone family is too sanitized. I mean is Don Vito Corleone even a crime boss? All he does is extort gambling and just use intimidation. The man rightfully had his vengence against the Don who killed his entire family in Sicily, Does his best to end a conflict without too much bloodshed, thinks the Drug Buisness is too dangerous, survived being shot five times in the back. And ended up dying the perfect death while playing with his Grandson. He also pretty much had a State Funeral, same with Michael who had a State Wedding in Sicily with Appolonia. (The whole village of Corleone was practically participating in the wedding)
I have more to discuss, but personally why I think like this towards the movies is because I have been introduced to Martin Scorsese and his Goodfellas and Casino. These movies properly portray the Mafia for what they really are. Ruthless Criminals, but who are also just down to earth ordinary guys. The Godfather is too romanticized, too dramatic, and sometimes too political. In Godfather 2 the whole Cuba Sequence is just some commentary of America's Reaction to the Cuban Revolution. Goodfellas never felt the need to go to Sicily or Italy just so that characters can reflect on the Old Italian Country.
In the end I just got spoiled by Martin Scorsese, but either way I still think these movies were great because of their Dramatic angle.

I expected it to be dark and serious all the way with no light hartedness or hurmorous characters and events.
But than I got Forrest Whiticker dancing to Rolling Stones, that whole stage scene in the middle of a river with cowgirls dancing in front of soldiers? It just threw me off a bit.
In the end though I think Platoon is the best Vietnam War movie.

Also the Godfather had this problem. What was the point with that Johnny Fontane story arc? When compared to the rest of the movie the whole issue with Johnny getting casted for a movie (where they forced the producer through intimidation by cutting of his prized horse's head) that was pretty pointless to the overall plot of the first Godfather.

Well, that was an evening wasted. The TV I finally repaired (bad power supply) got hung on the wall tonight - no small effort for a 109 lb beast. Powered it up and in 5 minutes, poof! More like a loud POP. So much for that. Time for a new TV, which shopping for a TV ain't all bad :D
