Inspired by this post and the 'what is this game' thread, I thought I'd kinda combine the two so people (including myself) have a resource for tracking down games they can't remember the names of and such (what better place than GOG?).
The one I'm looking for has to be about the most obscure game ever...I've been trying to remember what it is almost since I played it about 15 years ago in school..no one seems to know it.
It's a first-person graphical adventure, black and white. On about the top two-thirds of the screen there's the graphics, on the bottom there's a box for text (vaguely like Ishar, Shadowgate, etc).
I remember some areas: the moors, a lair, some garden place, limbo. Enemies: miser, nightmare (it was a fucking cool looking horse on fire or something).
I remember one place where you had to recite an incantation..there was fighting..you would type in or click what to do when you encountered an enemy (i.e. attack, run, etc).
I feel like it's called 'The Village' or something like that, but extensive searching online came up with nothing.
Does anyone know what this game is and how I can play it again?

Hmm, yours sounds vaguely familiar, is it a licenced game or something original?
The game I'm looking for is an old isometric adventure (either late amiga or early PC, it was on floppy anyway), it was fairly generic save for the magic system. You didn't have a static palette of spells, you created them yourself out of runes & could create overcomplicated & self defeating things such as a bolt of fire that hit and burned the target but then exploded into a burst of healing magic

Don't know what yours is but sounds awesome! Surprised that system didn't catch on.

It's not onf othe old SSI Gold Box games is it? Maybe Pool of Radiance? I'm just throwing those out considering you said monsters like Nightmare ( which I know the AD&D system has ) and places like limbo that I know I visited in at least on of the games.
Of course I think only some of the oldest of those games had just first person...other started having a tactical overview during combat.
Oh well, just throwing out a guess :)
Could it be the game called
Legend ? That's an old amiga game that used rune spells. Although I've never played it myself ( I think, can't rmemeber all old games )

It's not any of those games, and doesn't have any kind of side menu as far as I can recall. Also, as I said, it's black and white.
Seems to resemble Secret of the Silver Blades a fair bit, but the graphics were more basic.
Good to know some of the stuff existed in the AD&D universe..I'm not crazy. :)

Yeah I just saw you had replied underneath stating the game was original as well ( and the Gold Box are licensed from AD&D universe ). Duh!

Looks like (not exactly, but very similar) 'Demo World'' (they call it 'World Builder' but that's the engine) and 'Enchanted Scepters':

It's not these games though, as it takes place in an older universe..these seem to have modern elements (computers and such).
But this confirms another suspicion I had: it's a Mac game. Thought I was just imagining that, but definitely not now that I see these.

Ok, maybe this does not fit exactly how it looked..but it does sound somewhat similar to what you desribed.
I found a reference to some old school Mac RPG game called : "Theldrow! "

chautemoc, was that game you're looking for a point & click thing or a text adventure with graphics? Nothing stylistically like Lords Of Midnight or The Hobbit was it?

There are two games which have been eluding me for a while.
The first is for the PC from 1990 or thereabouts. It is set in a land which seems to be in eternal night. The unusual thing about this game is that all the characters and foreground objects are black, and the background is drawn in detail, so you everything happens in silhouette. It's side-view and you wander around and fight monsters with a sword, and you can also have magic spells bound to your F-keys. If you notice that you're walking past a tower, you can turn and visit it. There you can talk to the occupant (I remember the game referring to them as the "sage" or "mage") and trade rumours, maps or spell recepies. One tower is your own, it has a shelf of jars on the left which contain spell ingredients, a book which shows the spell recepies you know, a set of vials for deciding the amounts of ingredients to use, and a cauldren to mix them to create spells.
The other game was for the NES or Famicom (I don't know which). It was a fun platformer puzzle-type game. Your character looks like a bronze head with little feet. You have to get from where you start to a large door which opens only if you have rescued all the other "head people" trapped on the level. A-button jumps and B-button head-butts. You have stacks of breakable blocks, boulders that can be pushed (or smashed with your head to set them rolling). The enemies wear helmets, so they look like helmets with feet, and if you head-butt them you knock them over for a time. The screen does not scroll, but it wraps around so if you walk through the left side you come out of the right side.

I wouldnt know..didn't have anything else back then. :)

One uses 72-pin cartidges, the other 60-pin.

Might it have been one of the early Might & Magic or Wizardry games? They weren't black and white, but they were very basic. The early Ultima games might also fit somewhat IIRC.
