It's as if your neighbour borrowed a 100$ from you to repair his house, repaired nothing and asked you for 200$ next time. And so on and on for years. It's crippling the EU. And it's not helping anyone. Why would Greece reform, if we constantly show them they don't really have to, they will get the money anyway?

When Poland has to pay a fine for messing something up, I expect us to do so. I expect us to do our part and fullfill all requirements before joining the eurozone. AFAIK Greece lie about their financial status to get into the EU. They should never have been allowed in. The previous government even lied about the recent financial status which was only realised when the current government got into power.

I think this will probably be their third bailout (open to correction), 240€ billion so far and now they want another 30 billion (suggested figure).

How much slack can you keep giving a country like that?

It is terrible what is happening to the people there but in all fairness their previous governments got them into this fix along with tax evasion and corruption, not the EU or the IMF.

Greece is only a very tiny %-age of EU's GDP, the biggest problem they will cause is on the money markets for other EU countries trying to raise money. The value of the euro will drop making exports cheaper which can be good in the short term, hopefully good enough to get the EU over the hump before that piper has to be paid because of rising import prices.

I think the EU is now strong enough financially to weather this storm compared to the last time Greece had to be bailed out.

first, calm down. it really doesn't help to bring more anger and rage into the debate.
then you have to remember that we didn't just lend them money. We also demanded a brutal austerity program. Which basically destroyed the greek economy. Obviously that makes it kinda hard to repay your debt.
There is certainly a lot that can be blamed on the greek government. But the EU finally needs to admit that the idea of austerity totally failed.

Yes, that is exactly what I said. I'm glad you saw through my post and read it this way, as I intended all along. I hate Greeks. If it was anyone else, I would love to keep supporting them forever despite lack of any cooperation on their part.

First of all, as pointed out in point one, you are completely clueless about the extent of "cooperation" all these last years. And its effects.

Secondly, if it was another country, you probably would have had the same stance, designating that whole population as worthless and undeserving. This deshumamizing view ("these nationals are guilty, fuck them") would have been applied to another population, but it would have been the exact same thing.

You mean Greece joining the European Union back in 1981? Or by EU you mean the Eurozone back in 2001?

Let me first remind you that in the last 10 years, we had 7 elections. The part about the "lies" of the finances was for the government of 2004 (or was it 2007?), and it was commented by the government of 2009 and the one of 2011. The "lie" so to speak was basically a matter of timing. I don't remember how exactly that worked, but it has to do with trade treaties when you make the treaty on one fiscal year, but you get the money on the following one. The "lie" was when the income was counted, is it counted on the year you make the treaty, or on the year you get the money? In both cases, you only get paid once, and your books report the correct amount of money, but there is a difference of what you did report.

Politicians are elected in order to make decisions and take responsibility for making them. In ideal world politicians should represent interest of the state that sometimes is not equal to sum of the interests of individual citizens.
