Sylvari tend to have Scottish, Welch or Gaelic (Irish) names. Pick your gender: male, female or neutral. And then… here’s the kicker… think about a MEANING for your name. As an Elementalist, perhaps you want to focus on fire magic: so you might type in “fire” or “summer” in the “meaning” field on that page. Or think about the personality of your character. Perhaps you want to be a Sylvari who fights to defend the Pale Tree above all else: you might choose “defender” or “protector” in the “meaning” field.

And because I’m a bit of a lore-nut who has played Guild Wars since the original open beta of GW1 back in 2004… here’s some extra GW2 geek-lore-stuff:

Sylvari only have a first name, because Sylvari do not sexually reproduce. The Sylvari race has only existed on Tyria for about 25 years, and every Sylvari has been spawned from a seed pod from the Pale Tree. So, technically speaking, every existing Sylvari is a sibling of every other Sylvari, even though our player-character Sylvari are a generation or two older than the Firstborn, such as Caithe.

Sylvari do not choose a name. Nor are they given a name by the Pale Tree or any of their relatives. When a Sylvari awakens, they simply know their name. Or, more specifically, their name is something they discover during their time in “The Dream” (aka “the Sylvari tutorial instance”).

VERY IMPORTANT: Sylvari do not have family or clan names (i.e. they only have a first name), but if a Sylvari chooses to append something to their given name, it will be it a sort of honorific which represents the cycle of the day when they awakened, such as “Tristan of the Dawn” or “Myraleth Duskborn”.

So, your Sylvari should ideally have just a single name. Use that link I provided to find a name based on your choice of origin (ideally Irish, Scottish, Welch… but maybe something else if it strikes your fancy), gender, and meaning (think about some defining attribute of your character). If that name is already chosen, then append an honorific representing the cycle of the day in which your Sylvari awakened, or possibly your profession or personality.

Examples: a thief named Canath awakened in the cycle of noon might be referred to as Canath Noonshadow; a thief named Canath awakened in the cycle of night might be referred to as Nightwalker Canath.
