What really pisses me off is how a simple term is being constantly mangled and warped to fit some narrative to the point where no discussion can be had because it always means what's convenient. ...
To be discriminating is good, to be discriminatory is not. Discrimination is not black or white. Folks take the specific legal meaning, and leverage it as a loaded word to make superficially logical arguments stronger by rethorically adding emotional weigth.

I figured that people would be interested to hear from some of the developers who happened to find their way onto that list. Needless to say, none of them are happy.

And old and true proverb...

'Don't shit where you eat.'

Good job, IGDA. Good job.

Just checked the list in question. I'm not on it. I feel vaguely insulted.

You were at one point, but I guess they moved some criteria around.

I'm still not quite sure what to make of the list. I think it's completely stupid that they would run such a tool that does not actually verify anything, and the reality is is that no one on the list, even the people whose followers they're going through have been even accused of harassment. It's disturbing when you get right down to it, and worse when you realize, no one did their fucking homework about it!

Really? I feel honored.

My name might have been on there and my browser search just missed it. I have no idea :P

Try to see it as a defense mechanism. Much as they like to believe themselves sophisticated, most of the folks using the block list are rather fragile greenhouse flowers. Given the emotional outbursts when they are confronted by different opinions, and since isolating them is ethically wrong, I can't say their trying to self isolate is inherently problematic. Probably helps them function. The slander of course, is a separate matter.

On a personal level, I don't care if a person chooses to use a block list. Its their personal decision to do so, and they're the ones who have to deal with the consequences. And for most people, that's even fine, we don't talk to every person in the world and we're not likely to get along with everyone. Personally I don't like the idea of using someone else's definitions when they've been so loosely defined, but eh, I'm me, not them. If it makes them feel comfortable, and it's the choice they've made with the power they have, then fuck it, who am I to judge?

As far as the IGDA...that's another bag of worms, and I'm FAR less forgiving for an entire organization. They should have vetted the damn thing and known how easy it would be to have false positives on it. They should have someone who checks the damn list so that it doesn't blatantly have developers on it, that it doesn't have one of their own chairpeople on the godforsaken thing. I can't comment on the code itself, so sadly someone else will, but I can judge on the basis of the list itself, based on who follows certain people that have not been accused of harassment, but instead have been outspoken Pro-GGers, it feels more like it's ideology driven and that's pretty dangerous, especially since anyone can grab it without realizing that it's being misrepresented as a more positive thing then it really is. It feels like there has been no effort into vetting the list or being honest with people.

You don't have to convince me on the dangers of ideology. Me I truly 'enjoy' how the advocates of "the personal is political" are the first to close off their personal to discussion...

Anyway, you know the joke about the Jew in the ghetto whom the rabbi caught in the park reading a Nazi newspaper?
He said in the middle of all the depressing news about pogroms, this newspaper made him feel better because all the news kept going about the super powerful cabal of jewish people. Gave him hope...

That's what comes to mind when I see jefe's post higher, or a comment I made recently...

So these anti-GGers are saying that Jennifer Dawe should be boycotted because she is pro-GG and thus hates women and supports harassment of female game developers...

How exactly do they avoid cognitive dissonance? Do they practice some kind of secret technique for preventing their brains from processing information contradictory to their worldview?

Anyway... Here's an interview with Jennifer Dawe from early October:

this is just ugly

I read it in the comments: "hate mob"?
based on just this conversation, they are the hate mob not GG
it seems like there is a media ban on the IGDA story. a lot of portals that should have cover something like that, didn't.

nobody at gamedev.net forum talked about it
arstechnica didn't cover it either (despite being a tech portal - including IT).

--edit--

considering they cover the FBI offering game dev help and also the hacker telling a bomb is on the some game publisher plane, interesting they didn't cover this.

googling gamasutra the last news on igda they cover is on the dancer thing.

Ok, I thought it was bad when there was one tweet comparing GG to the Jews during the Holocaust, but this... this is somehow worse.

Ironically, there was also a tweet wishing for the members of gamergate to be sent to the gas chambers.
So yeah, idiots all around.
