Well, here's the thing, sometimes they do need help from the "SJW brigade" because that brigade might be part of the developer's fan-base. Like Zedrik Cayne says in his blog post, developers listen to feedback from the fans be they SJW or not. They listen because like Cayne says, "We would be remiss if we didn't."

No, I disagree, no developer needs an angry SJW mob grasping at straws in their complaints about diversity...try again. As to the image, you just don't get it do you? Gamergate did not do this. The media did this. They didn't fact check, pulled some image off the internet and mis-attributed it. But here we go, another SJW crazy trying to blame anything that goes wrong in the world on GG. He did start the StopGamergate2014 hashtag, but I'm not sure how you can call that Gamergate harassing him as opposed to him harassing Gamergate. Let's remember, for crazies like Ryan, antiGG is always harassed by criticism even when they engage take steps to harass themselves. Because they believe their "Holy War" is just.

Not to mention advocating for authoritarian bending of art to suit his tastes; and when asked says there it in the name of inclusiveness but can't prove how anything relating to inclusiivity or exclusivity. Ie pushing an unproven opinion without fact based grounds; all the name of ''inclusiveness''.

Look. The worst thing you can do is to ever listen to any part of your fan base, because fans don't know what they want, and I am sure of it because I play Magic The Gathering and ever since 2013 there have been mayor changes on different things in the game, from character design to story and gameplay. And guess what? Half onf the fan base panics with every change and wants things to stay the way they were, but in the end they admit to enjoy the changes.
Same happens with Warframe, a game I love.

And if you change your stories, designs, or any other art to appease a part of the fan bae, specially a politically correct one, the best result you might get is a reduction of quality, and at worst you end up alienating the other half of your fan base. I have seen that.

If your fans no longer like what you are doing straight from your heart then good riddance.

Of course there are things you must never change, for example respecting the main lore and core game play. If you change such things you risk becoming like League of Legends, with an inconsistent and unstable lore. But that is more an aspect of consistency than appeasing the fans.

In fact, some very successful franchises have writers who are not allowed to admit they read fan content due to both copyright reasons and consistency. One example is My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. The writers are not allowed to read fan fictions or at least officially they don't read them because the Hasbro execs don't want them to turn the show into a big fanfic and because they would have to credit the fans.

The only moment when you should listen to the fans is when a change already made alienates a large amount of the fan base. And most of the time the best you can do is carefully fix it without drastic changes or avoid controversy, you should never do what the writers of Legend of Korra did with the finale.

Its sad they push for anti-discrimination but published an article like that on a whim, without even considering that Muslims don't wear turbans like that or that the vest was shopped on, or who even took the picture. In the original, the guy is taking a selfie with his i-pad. In the shopped version he seems to be holding a plaque or something. Just a few seconds of thought would've established that the photo was fake. But nope; who's got time for dat when they're out decompressing the oppressed minorities?
