I had to look up Samus to make sure it was the same Samus that I was thinking of. I'm not even sure how we would know what gender Samus is without reading about it in one of the game manuals. She doesn't look any different than a man would in that armor. Fuck if I know how we would even know she's trans or not.

From what I could gather from the talk page on the wikipedia, there was a translation problem with the English version that's not in the Japanese version. The Japanese version uses the equivalent of "it" but that's not considered respectful for non-animals and non-objects in English so it wound up being mistranslated to he. Then there's that plot twist later on.

I also find it rather hard to believe that Nintendo would slip a trans character into one of their games at that point. Granted, I don't understand Japanese culture, but I don't think that it was accepted back then to even the extent that it is now. So, it's rather unlikely that they'd have a trans character in any of their games of that vintage.

This is so stupid. I mean, Wu is basically shitting on all the lore, retconed and not, created around Samus and the whole Metroid franchise which confirms Samus is a woman, and a pretty much average woman mentality wise. She is never even shown with homosexual tendencies. She is a normal straight woman, and she is even motherly. She might be a genetically modified super human with the skill and training to fight against space pirates, but in the mental aspect she is a normal woman, strong willed and brave, but normal.

Donald duck wears no pants and there's clearly nothing down there. Perhaps we could make him trans. I mean that's a much shorter leap than making Samus into a trans-woman.

Don't get me wrong, it would be nice to have a broader range of characters, but retconning somebody elses work because you're wanting something else is really the domain of fanfic. And not even good fanfic. It was bad enough that they made Watson into a woman for Elementary, but this is ridiculous.

I'm confused with those trying to make Samus to be trans. Wouldn't that literally be saying "she's strong because of her "maleness." ?" aka a "man with boobs". Aren't these the messages that they do not want?

I remember a few years ago reading a movie review of the Alien franchise by a feminist movie critic, so I emailed her about her love for masculine characters in the franchise such as Ripley and Vasquez. I know this idea of masculine/feminine behavior co-opting is a big 'bone' of contention in gay-land. I sent some common sense questions as to her position on idealizing the female archetype as a literal interpretation of a masculine stereotype. I mean if a feminist believes in the power and strength of the female design, both physical and metaphysical, then why would so many feminists gush over 'strongly male' type female characters? At best it's a decent facsimile, at worst it's just appropriation and poor imitation.

I'm sure at least a few have countered back with the typical 'but why do strong characters have to be assumed as male?' But that's rhetorical nonsense. Civilization sees it as that. It's a construct... maybe good, maybe bad but it's still an axiom of our human societies. So far in our history, nearly every civilization has been based on power and war, control of people and resources through conquest... MANLY conquest. You may disagree with the nature of it, but it is fact. Arguing for or against something doesn't prove it's still not an assumed fact. Some people don't get that far into the conversation. That's how I leveled my questions to her. A few simple questions of curiosity and subjective interest. I wasn't trying to attack her or troll her. I was sincerely and without condescending, trying to establish a line of dialogue with her to get her elaborate on what I thought was an interesting (if somewhat disagreeable) view on the films.
