So, there has been a talk at GDC about women and minorities in game companies. As usual, "lots of speaking but no doing"(sorry for my poor grammar):
http://gamasutra.com/view/news/238165/Women_share_their_1ReasonToBe_in_games_in_a_powerful_GDC_panel.php

But what interested me was to google images every speakers:
Leigh Alexander
Elizabeth LaPensee
Brenda Romero
Constance Steinkuehler
Amy Hennig
Sela Davis
Adriel Wallick
Katherine Cross

......With maybe the exception of LaPensee (for English speakers, it means " the tought" in French) who's supposed to be indigenous, I just see a bunch of white academic females. Where are the african/asian/whatever?

What a failure, there is more diversity in my street (and I live in very small town) than in this farce....

Admitting that there's a problem is the first step to solving it. What exactly do you expect them to do, take control of the major studios so they can change the industry? Also, the lack of diversity in the group of people who were willing to speak up despite their fears of being doxxed or threatened doesn't reflect poorly on the group, all it means is that certain people are willing to stick their necks out and lose their privacy.

As for Tim Schafer's joke: for a bunch of people who often claim that women and minorities are overly sensitive (whether due to the portrayal of people in games or the lack of diversity or whatever), you guys are some of the most overly sensitive people I've ever seen.

the whole wrong of his joke is that he attacked #notyourshield
a hashtag created by minorities who support gamergate. They have very often been called sockpuppet accounts stating that trhe users are not black or female but just lying whites. (so women have been told by anti gg they cannot be women etc). Many female and black #notyourshield users have been relentlessly attacked by anti gg.

GG is angry because schafer basically insulted all diverse people in gamergate and again denied they are minorities.
Strange that my post was voted down but the one I agreed with in it was not.

Edit: And the one that agreed with mine was neither.

What is the industry? People complain that gamedeveloping has been too democratized and anybody can make games from their room and then at the GDC you only see a bunch of white guys/gals just because they're a bunch of graduated (and truly privileged) people. Like politics, those guys/gals don't represent society but their interests (circle jerking). Comparing the volume of games out, the "industry" is more a bunch of individuals/micro companies rather than big studios.

And the pseudo "they won't come because they're afraid of harrasment, blablabla" sounds more like "I know a friend of the friend of the mother of my half-cousin". => Facts please.... Who are those people who supposedly got driven away off the industry? Reminds of the "Oh I won't become a gamedev because it's too hostile" sorry dear but if you don't have any backbone, you won't make it in life in general. Period.

Fun fact: article hasn't been commented yet although it's at the best spot on the frontpage of Gamasutra. Devs commenting on the site are generally tired of those types of articles because it doesn't represent them as they truly are: "workers" in the first place.

And I'm not sensitive, I'm just calling things out like I do with the muppets politicians of my country.

What was "the problem" again?

No, the first step is finding the problem. I still have to hear what the problem is.
OK, last thing (I guess) from this GDC 2015:

I LOL'ed at the writer's dismay in front of "gender neutral bathrooms" (WTF is that, can't they say bathroom no more? ^o^)

Maybe they can stop trying to drive studios with ethnic minorities out of business... you know - practice what you preach.

Pretty strange, to invent a new word for something completely mundane as a bath room. What's next? Gender neutral gyms?

Why Feminist frequency Almost made Me Quit Writing About Video Games
http://metaleater.com/video-games/feature/why-feminist-frequency-almost-made-me-quit-writing-about-video-games-part-1
Thanks for posting that! I had the Youtube version playing in the background yesterday while I did some work and it was very interesting. Aside from the obvious out-of-context factual errors in Anita's videos, my biggest problem with her work is that taking it seriously would only result in female characters being homogenous in a different way, or removed entirely because male characters don't get the same level of harsh scrutiny. I agreed with almost everything Liana said, and it's a relief to see someone else make those arguments too (especially someone who identifies as a feminist because that kind of undercuts the usual "You're a misogynist!" or "You have internalized misogyny!" responses).

But sadly, there have been others like many on #notyourshield. The typical argument seems to be that the patriarchy brainwashed them. These radicals just cannot believe there can be anything wrong with their message, so they will always make up an excuse for why those who disagree are wrong.

I don't really use Twitter (I only read Twits if they get posted in an article) so I'm not sure what #notyourshield may have already said (although I am aware of the general harassment against them).

With that in mind, Liana's argument is the first I've heard to use current-day feminist theory to justify the beliefs I arrived at independently regarding what's actually sexist (or not sexist) in videogames and in the discussion around videogames. I'm not a feminist (I don't even know what the term means nowadays because so many people use it to mean different things) and I don't know the academic labels for a lot of these concepts, so I found it interesting that the ideas I have are actually considered valid feminist theory (at least in some academic circles).

I have recently linked videos to a feminist who refers to herself as based mom.

If you haven't already, i really recommend her videos they are very interesting
Not to mention she gets her books burned by other feminists!
