This whole case sound like practices from certain countries.

Someone local makes the claim human rights are being violated, next day the government of said country will suddenly have "discovered" some "evidence" that this person had links to a terrorist group that bombs kindergartens and sells young girls.

This is common: remove the credibility from criticism by linking the critic to extremists and criminals.
And the best part? Since in both cases the media are controlled by the target of the criticism everyone will believe it.
