oh aye. there is nothing interesting with an cultural industry where MOST publisher demanded to decide the sex of the protagonist. (I use MOST instead of SOME here, as from the article it seems it happened a lot to these people. Nothing against you, but I believe them over you in this case.)

This is why I have really been staying out of this debacle (yeah, I got bored the last days...). One the one hand you have the Sarkeesians of this world - stretching the point beyond recognition, and on the other you have this attitude - complete dismissal. The truth is somewhere in between, but both sides are so entrenched that there will never come anything out of this.

What dismissal though? Saying something is not interesting, or not a problem, or obvious, is not necessarily a dismissal of any facts. It is a subjective opinion which in principle is equally valid to your opinion that this is a problem.

You see, speaking of problems is problematic ;) as it usually implies solutions. Dismissal of certain solutions =/= dismissal of the problem, and disagreeing on status of x being a problem =/= dismissal of actual objective facts.

That said, yes, there is dismissal by a minority that representation is disproportionate. This is a factually ignorant dismissal. There is a dismissal by a larger proportion yet still small imo that this is a status that should change, this is a subjective dismissal, probably related to privilege (to use your probable language). Then there is a dismissal by close to a majority that the change should be forced or accelerated, because this constituency does not agree with you there is a problem, just an accident. This dismissal you will have a harder time arguing against, unless you wear the cap your opponents want to put on you of being against freedom of speech, anti liberty to offend, for political correct censorship, etc...

If your side didn't throw out the baby with the water, things would not have entrenched. Takes two sides to wage war, and in this case it's factually clear that sjws decided to come into gaming and accelerate change. And further, instead of outcompeting the established conservative actors (well they tried... and failed mostly), they brought the typical tactics: subversion, radical personalization, appealing to external authorities.

Not cool ;) not cool at all... and you folks wonder why the blowback and actually believe it's misogyny! Tragicomedy really...

I don't see my comment as complete dismissal. If female protaganists were historically the norm in video games, most publishers would insist that protaganists be female. Publishers don't care about individual games, they care about profit. That is a big reason why a lot of AAA games are just recycled. It is easier to make Call of Duty 27 because the basic frame work is there and there is a built in audience.

For myself I don't care about the sex of the characters. All I want is a good game. I also think that the publishers who are basing investment decisions about a game around the sex of a character are idiots.

Yeah, that just proves my point. Publishers are run by eggheads who can't look beyond tables and charts; more games with men as leads are selling, therefore if we make the leads of out game men it will sell more. I mean, there couldn't be any other reason for that, could it? See above, I doubt that changing the cast would make the game sell any better.

There is a lot of this in there, yes, but as you also say - it is a symptom for something. I do not think it is a symptom of any kind of oppressive hostile sexism as per Sarkeesian, but more of kind of a low level background patronising radiation kind of sexism in gaming. It is the "sure the little women out there play games, but all they want is casual games and the Sims. Only manly men play real games" kind of mindset. So it becomes a self-fulfilled and perpetuated prophesy. Only manly-men play real games, therefore we make the games for manly-men, and lo and behold, only manly-men play them.... that's how I see it, at least.
