Sorry to drop this here. A friend seems to have found a box of new sealed Star trek gear. Things like model ships from the original and maybe TNG. They are wondering what it would be worth so they can price it appropriately. Suggestions?

If those are original TOS era models in good condition, they are worth a lot.
But if those are, and they most likely are, later reproductions, they are not that valuable. Although if they are in a sealed box, you can get maybe 2-3 times the money you originally paid for it. Otherwise they have mostly just the value of having something cool on top of the bookshelf. Some trekkies could pay something for them in any case, but it's not a lottery ticket, at least not a winning one.

TNG stuff is obviously decades younger no matter what the condition it is in, although at least the original 80's and 90's stuff is now retro, and again, if it's sealed in box or otherwise in good condition, you can get some money for it, but not a lot.

Assuming these are some kind of plastic model ships, they made thousands and thousands of those, so having them is not very uncommon, and they are not very collectable in that sense. If they are something more valuable and rare, like some metal cast models that have been available in science fiction magazines and stuff but not toy stores, they are obviously more valuable.

I foresee it going full hollywood'ised romance in the stars junk with a focus on boat sinking action at high resolution and HDR.
You know the same thing we experienced basically in gaming.
First you had limits and people pushed them to make interesting stuff, then it devolved into a big dickins contest over graphics and then it got so far that smaller creative groups were essentially locked out of the narrative and suddenly bam production is too expensive to focus on anything other than glam so everything became cookie cutter cardboard cutout the same.

Actually, that's not entirely correct. With a lot of technology and software being available for an ordinary user, even small groups of people today can create decent graphics in their videos. Just look at Star Trek fan films, like "Battle of Axanar". Sure, they may have less flashy effects but still are quite above "watchable level".

In fact, the main problem in mentioned Axanar production was the "cease and desist" letter from CBS/Viacom. Apparently, the project is still somehow alive but the meddling from the corporation created troubles for all the fundraising. Before that team was able to procure money quite successfully.

Apparently these are all sealed, so from that and hearing a guestimate that they would have been $75-$100 new, that means they are probably $300 each (no idea how many just they found a big box of them).

edit: Seems it's not TNG, it's AMT or something, much older... Here's some photos.

Most of those are TOS era, with the latter of each pair being TNG. Placing it anywhere from the 60s to the 90s. There never was a Star Trek series going by AMT.

Instead, AMT stands for Aluminum Model Toys, one of the early "Space Age" toymakers.

Yeah i came to that conclusion afterwards looking at the images that it was the manufacturer not specific series name. I'm just forwarding what i'm told by them. *shrugs*

Been wondering what's happened with Star Trek. Does it feel like eons since we had a good Star Trek series?
Are Picard and most recent ST really that bad? (i liked Lower Decks...yes i know its a parody but i enjoy them regardless)

For the CGI part outside of the ship, certainly.

But they need good writers and stories. And probably keep it low budget most of the time. For some reason really high budgets seem to push high CG going for wow factor or explosions, and not good storytelling.

Totally turning something on it's head? Having Picard acting in contradiction of how he would have acted? The federation suddenly going stupid?

If you don't mind fanwork, I recommend the Star Trek audio drama, "Outpost" by Giant Gnome. It feels authentic to DS9 Trek, centered on a isolated space station that is in poor condition. Most episodes are about 40 minutes apiece, with at least 80 episodes the last time I checked. It is good stuff, especially concerning the administrator of the station - a tighfisted, "efficient", bean counter.

Yes, Picard is complete garbage, possibly the worst Star Trek ever made.

I recently watched it, and I wished I haven't.

I'm not going to spoil things for those who want to watch it, but let me briefly say this: the whole point of the series seems to be breaking old Star Trek universe. Whether you like it or not, Gene Roddenberry envisioned a future where people have no conflicts and get pleasure of trying to become better human beings.

In Picard, people have nothing but conflicts and arguments, use foul language, resort to drug abuse, and do things for monetary gain. And of course they have made a complete idiot of Picard, who can't do anything right.

The most embarrassing moment of the series is when Picard is first interviewed on TV so that the whole galaxy sees him, and later he goes on an undercover mission wearing an eyepatch. Yes, eyepatch. Adventure game logic. And of course as a part of his "disguise" he is using a silly fake French accent, even though he's supposed to French in real life.

And they bring a dead Trek person back from the dead just to kill that person again in the series. Stupid.

I'm not even going to comment on that Romulan Jedi Knight kid.

Even if we look past all Trek stuff, it's simply bad science fiction. They have some stupid holographic controls for their computers and ships and all, but none of that could ever work in real life, so it's there just for the sake of using CGI where pushing a button is all that is needed.
