It just depends on what they want to do with the movies and whether Discovery gets ratings. I think it should keep going, it's a worthy franchise

Oh, the franchise definately needs to keep going, and it will. Even if Discovery fails utterly, the franchise is way to strong to stay down for too long.

But I have to say, I've had something of a change of heart about Discovery. I mean, I still find the trailer rather underwhelming, but the issues like the way the Klingons look, the uniforms and other prequel- related stuff... while I'd rather they kept more to the way things should be, I'm letting go of my fan-OCD on this. Looking back on TOS right now, I realise just how much that series retconned itself while going on, and it never stood in the way of telling great stories. And it was years before the change in Klingon's appeariance was explained, for years it was inexplicable, and we were fine with that. Hell, the uniforms swapped red and yellow in TNG just because Stewart and Frakes looked better in red. Starfleet changes their uniforms every five minutes it seems, as after all they are just costumes and need to fit the look and feel of the current production. So while I still have doubts and issues with Discovery, I'll try to be more open and positive about it. It deserves a fair shot, despite questionable choices.

Damn, I hope they're not pulling a standard Joseph Campbell mentor death with Michelle Yeoh. She'll make a kickass Star Trek captain (not just literally). It looks like she won't make it into episode 3 though. :|

I don't think she needs to die, since she's not the captain of Discovery, so we don't need her out of the picture to bring in Jason Isaacs. That said, I don't think I've ever even heard of her before this, so I don't really care either way :P Now Isaacs I'm a big fan of, so I'm looking forward to seeing him in the captain's chair.

Tbh the new Star Trek looks like it will be a repeate of Enterprise. Which is a shame, as I loved TNG, DS9 & VOY (VOY being my fav.)

Seeing Seth MacFarlane's The Orville trailer it reminds me alot of Galaxy Quest, and it clearly takes alot of things from Star Trek also looks alot better, than the upcoming one. And that fact that its going to be online only (Star Trek) I dont see it lasting long.

There is an interesting hintin a new interview with Nicholas Meyer about him working on another new, undisclosed Star Trek project. No idea what that could be, possibly a movie since I doubt there would be another series in developement alongside Discovery. Anyway, I'm curious.

So when he says they have found a "niche"... does he mean a place in the story where they don't need to choose which of the two timelines is the "correct" one?

It's too soon for a second TV show, so a movie is the safest alternative to assume.

It's set in the original timeline, that much has been made clear repeatedly. I think he means that the moment when it's set and the story itself is such that they still have elbow room to do their own thing wihout worrying too much about continuity. I'd assume that means the the story won't contradict anything we know, but it won't tie into anything either.

We finally have a premier date for Star Trek Discovery. September 24, 2017 is the day we'll finally be able to watch this show. The article below from moviepilot.com also discusses why the show was delayed so much.
