I won't vanish completely. They are not the only store like this out there. Visit "List of drm-free video games digital distributors" (yes, I failed to link it) thread here on the forums for example. Yes, they may be smaller than gog but with time they will become what gog is now.

I've flirted with making a thread like this multiple times and have written walls of text trying to grapple with all this, but ultimately I didn't have the heart to post it. I own so many games on GOG and would have been happy to keep adding to my collection, but this has really shaken my faith in the longevity of this endeavor.

The collapsing stock, the loss of reputation and the possibility of developers/publishers not wanting to be associated with the controversy pulling their games or never offering them in the first place. There's plenty of games I want to buy during this sale but, with so much uncertainty, I haven't been able to bring myself to do it.

Also, EKLAIR34, it's worth making a special note about Steam: even though they don't mention anywhere that they have DRM free games and only a handful of developers/publishers openly say their games are DRM free, there are many games there that are DRM free. If you see a game that's DRM free there and it's not listed in this thread, people would be thankful if you informed them in the thread I just linked.

It's good to know that there are more stores where you can buy DRM-free games, but even so the disappearance of GOG would affect me a lot if it happens. More than anything because practically all the games that I like I have bought in GOG. I have some in the Humble Bundle, but not all the ones that I have bought in GOG are in that store, in fact there are games that in the Humble Bundle that are sold with DRM and GOG is the only place where they are sold without DRM. Just in case I am transferring all the games in my library to an external hard drive, but by the time GOG disappears, I will have to move these games to other external hard drives that I purchase to make sure I have enough backups I know there are games on Steam that are sold without DRM, I hope all 170 games in my GOG library are DRM-free on Steam, even if they don't state it. To calm your fears, I doubt gog will disappear. They will get through this. Activision blizzard did similar CCP ass licking and product butchering but they stabilized. Zenimax bethesda had also terrible launches and they are still here. Bioware also. But it is advisable to backup your library. Not so much because gog will disappear, but because backups are a good thing to have. At least if you're able to store them somewhere.

There is no DRM-free store even remotely comparable to the range of games, the number of users and the results achieved by GOG after all these years. Fortunately nothing is going to happen to GOG and neither to CDPR because the drama stirred up these days is only fueled by a minority of hotheads.

I'm very sorry for the non-release of Devotion, but in the end it's just a single game and life goes on anyway. When Hello Games after what they did with No Man's Sky is now praised by all, and publishers like EA, Activision and Ubisoft continue to grind millions, you can understand that for better or for worse nothing will change.

CD Project Red is an independent company with certain economic means, but it is not as big as the other companies you mentioned. Those companies are more than established and have enough financial power to get out of a predicament like this, but CD Project Red does not have the same luck. As for backups, I have practically all the games in my library on a hard drive, but as I have already said it is only a hard drive and I will have to consider purchasing a second hard drive just in case the first hard drive suffers some mishap

yeah, i think this has gone through the heads of many of the more loyal gog users who visit the forum, myself included. the situations with cyberpunk 2077 and devotion are both very disappointing, and gog cant seem to help ending up in the news once or twice a year for doing or saying something boneheaded.

that said, i'm not here because cyberpunk was supposed to be the second coming, and i'm not here to partake in gog's views, thoughts, & beliefs on the china/taiwan situation. i'm literally here because this is the best place to buy drm-free games, and that's it. and that's completely enough for me. sure there might be other drm-free retailers out there, but they don't hold a candle to the games gog offers. sure, "joe-shmoe's first asset flip unity game" on itch.io is great and all, but where else can you buy deus ex mankind divided, wolfenstein ii new colossus, or the bioshock series drm-free?

you might say i'm easily "bought" in this regard, and maybe i am. but that's because there are literally no more drm-free options quite like gog. so yeah, i bought some games before & during this sale. i might buy more. i certainly don't want gog to fail, and they will if everyone in there mom stops buying stuff. ultimately, it would be a damn shame if this place fell on the sword of the outrage of the month, not just for the people that have their main library here, but for the fact that we'd be losing the biggest drm-free games retailer.

i get it. the fact that cyberpunk was released in the shape it's in is insane (and still a bit hard to believe to be honest), and the devotion situation is... well, i'll just say they handled it poorly -- i was mad about it at first but then cooled off (they really need to work on there PR in the worst way). but i try to recognize that the world, and what we may or may not believe, especially as applies to running a business with international customers, is not always as black or white as we may want to believe.

and let me tell you.... people complain that gog struggles to keep it's offline installers up to date, but humble seems to struggle much worse with this. they are essentially a steam key retailer. the up-to-date-ness of their installers is a total crapshoot.

I'll still buy here, but can't deny they lost quite alot of goodwill with me, such a shame after recent releases i really enjoyed, Horizon Zero Dawn being the latest one.
And that's from someone who did not buy CP2077 nor has interest in horror genre.

As a former Desura user, I recommend backing up everything and keeping an eye out for GOG or any of the developers with games on GOG announcing the ability to get a key for your games on another service. Between releasing a game so bad that Sony broke conventions and removed it from their store, removing a game from GOG at the request of the CCP, and an upcoming lawsuit, I seriously doubt CDPR/GOG will be around for another year.

If you think CDPR is going to survive, ask yourself this: Who still shops on GOG and buys CDPR products going forward? Regular consumers will have zero faith in CDPR products, and will doubt the stability of GOG due to the lawsuits and CCP mandated removal of games. CDPR loyalists are either disgusted by CDPR and looking for alternatives, or are so servile that not even the impending Tencent/EGS takeover will buck their support. GOG lives off of Gwent whales now, basically.

It's really tragic, I thought GOG was an awesome service. I own hundreds of games on this platform, and I was happy to support CDPR. I don't understand why they decided to take all the goodwill and support they've received over the years and waste it on a rushed release and kissing some despots ass, I'll probably never understand how/why they stumbled so majestically into the heap of pig shit they find themselves in now. Maybe we'll get a documentary out of this, Id' watch it, sounds cool.

No, Devotion is not "just a single game."

Rather, this debacle is showing to the world the fact that GOG has no values nor integrity, and that they will bend the knee and ban and/or censor any games that a tyrannical foreign authority (who has no real authority over GOG, other than the authority that they artificially give to it for no good reason) wants them to.

How many more games will be banned or censored in the future for the same reason? Who knows? It could be a whole lot.

I also don't agree that "nothing will change." There are a whole lot of customers who've vowed to boycott GOG over the Devotion banning. That's a lot of money that isn't going to be going into GOG's coffers any more. And GOG is an extremely small-fry that could easily go bankrupt.
