Since the DarkXL project fizzled and was more or less left for dead I kind gave up on the thought of Dark Forces getting a new lease on life. Fret no more! The Force Engine is a fully reverse-engineered and complete implementation for Dark Forces. They're also working to fully support Outlaws as well in the future. :) Unfortunately, only Windows is supported at the moment, but Mac and Linux versions are in the works.

Nice!
I still prefer to play the original, but for some people that's just too much. The force engine is a good way to play the game with decent graphics.

The controls are "modern", can't be fully configured as in the original. At least I was not able to use ALT+Num4/6 for strafing while using Shift + Num8 to run forward at the same time, something that worked in the original.
(There should definitly be a mode to set the controls to be fully compatible with the original)

Also I haven't found an option to select my preferred General MIDI device.

Who doesn't want the full retro feeling and play this game with modern standards, will find, what he's looking for.

Sweet! I've never finished Dark Forces, I guess I found something to do over the holidays. I hope one of these days someone will reverse engineer Jedi Knight/Mysteries. While they kinda work out of the box, they're pretty fidgety.

Dark Forces takes time. If you don't know what to do, you can spend several hours in the prison or in the Anoats sewers.
Since the new engine has a savegame method, you can take breaks however.

Especially when using the lightsaber in Jedi Knight, try keyboard controls only, that gives you much better control.
Thanks for the heads up, will be checking this out.
Hmm, if Dark Forces had one bad thing about it, it was the save system. But then again, I will never forget the adrenaline rush of surviving the last boss fight with zero lives and literally 1 HP :P

Also, being able to play with the exact original look, just with higher frame rate and out of DOSbox is very welcome too. Might give it a shot if I ever replay it.

Funny, I just talked to a friend about Dark Forces just this weekend and he told me he never made it past the second level. It took me roughly 10 minutes when I tried out the sourceport a moment ago.

I spent most of the year playing all the old 2.5D classics (Doom, Duke 3D, Shadow Warrior, Wolfenstein), so maybe that has sufficiently prepared me for convoluted levels in this one.
First person to post here a request for the Dark Forces games, gets both for free(you must use for the account or the code will be openly given to any ninja)

edit:
as in, the person requesting must actually use the code!

Only 2? Technically there are 4... even if the last 2 aren't titled as such.

Star Wars: Dark Forces
Star Wars: Jed Knight: Dark Forces 2
Star Wars: Jedi Knight Outcast: Jedi Knight 2 (Dark Forces 3)
Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (Jedi Knight 3: Dark Forces 4)

I don't envy the person who had to come up with these somewhat silly titles. =P

The second level isn't complicated, just very dark until you turn the power back on :). Anoat and even more so the prison make good use of the different floors in DF (Doom could not have one room above another, Dark Forces can, back then that was something to get used to).

Well its an old code of mine. Technically I'm not being a cheap ass lol
(also its a code for more than 2 games.....but, since nobody seems to want them. I guess it doesn't matter much xD )

Actually 5, you forgot one :), back in the days it was sold as standalone version, which alters the counter for the last two by 1.
And for MotS they only used low res sounds and bad quality cutscenes :(

The rebranding may have had something to do has probably something to do with the game being on the Index-B in Germany, even if in the manual the Bryar pistol was called "stun gun" (really ... all those Storm Troopers are just sleeping).
(edit: But honestly I just think they wanted a new name which has "Jedi" in it.)

Back in the 90s a series of illustrated novels was released, called "Dark Forces" (Solldier for the Empire, Rebel Agent, Jedi Knight).

In Germany, only part 1 was released, telling the story hwo Kyle went from Storm Trooper to tebel recruit. Rebel Agent basically tells the story how Kyle stole the Death Star plans, while Jedi Knight is a variation of the story we know (Luke Skywalker has a cameo appearance too).

So there's some progress with this, nice.
The preceding XL thing really went nowhere after a promising start.

There was some talk back in the day that XL Engine could be a bit like ScummVM for FPS games, an infrastructure that allows adding new engines later on.

Anyone has any insider info on this, are they working on these Lucas engines only, or are they creating some infrastructure that might be used for other engine (re-)implementations in the future?

Tell ya what. Take the code, and I'll post in the ninja section whatever you don't take. Cool?
