While the game is Steam only it is DRM-free and plays fine without the client.

Still an extra piece of unnecessary software you have to download and install before you can download your game, and which -- like the official client -- mandatorily (and unnecessarily) merges the download and installation processes. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

When they introduce a way to download DRM-free game packages (which are advertised and supported as such) via any common web browser, and unpack/install them at a later date without an Internet connection, let me know. : )

You are wrong. The downloader just downloads all game files into a specified directory. If the game requires redistributables that are not installed you have to install them yourself, though they are usually downloaded with the game.

And the very nature of the game being DRM-free means you can just zip the directory and store it on any media of your liking and you have your DRM-free game package right there. :-)

DRM-free will most likely never be officially supported on Steam. That's why I don't buy there either.

You get a free licence for the game, you can download the game without the Steam client and never even have to install it, you can play the game DRM-free, you can zip the directory for future offline installation. And don't forget, if the game ever gets the GOG Connect treatment you get the GOG version on top.

If that's not good enough for you I don't know what is. Especially for free. You don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Thanks for the correction. :) First of all, SteamCMD is still a client. It may not be the client, but it's still a client.
Secondly, I don't have a Steam account, so I can't double-check, but I'm pretty sure you can only redeem "keys" via the client. I don't know if the command line version can do this, but even if it can, that would still mean that a client is required to add anything not purchased on Steam to your library. If I already had a Steam account, and had at least one of their clients installed, this would indeed be a no-brainer! But I don't, and I don't, and I doubt any amount of freebies is gonna entice me to change either of those facts at this point. : ) If this were someone coming to me in person, and giving me a well-meant personal gift, I would agree (even if the gift were a hideous and scratchy sweater, or a hand-carved sculpture that looked like a turd) -- accept the gift graciously, and throw it in a closet if you don't like it. But this is not that. This more akin to a store employee giving out a kinda cool, moderately-priced electronic doohickey to anyone and everyone who walks by a given chain store in a mall...but the doohickey requires special refill cartridges (or something) that can only be bought in that store chain. (Not a perfect analogy, but close enough.) In this situation, you better believe I'm going to pry open that mare's mouth and inspect her teeth and gums. ;P Again, if someone already had their eye on this hypothetical doohickey, and didn't mind having their use of it more or less tied to this one store, that's great for them.

You still need a browser to download from GOG, this is no different. Don't bother arguing about it either, not everyone falls for that DRM free propaganda bull.

I'd love a web-based Steam game downloader. In addition, I'd love it if Steam had full disclosures on which games were DRM-free and which were not, thus setting a precedence and maybe SUPPORTING the DRM-free movement.

But of course they won't do either. Their entire goal is to get their client to encompass all of the PC, and if it helps against doing that, they won't do it.
