I was one of these persons who were buying adventure games as soon as they were released in physical form and I got The Awakened as well. When I attempted to play it I could not get far because in 1st person free movement I get motion-sick too easily, so I was disappointed.
A couple years later I found out that Frogwares were releasing a remastered version with 3rd person view as well but, sadly, they wouldn't release a patch/update for us who already bought the original :/
Thanks to GOG (and the great sale prices) I finally got to play it and I cannot help but think that I would miss on a great game had it not been on sale here!

PS. Oh yes, the phrase input puzzles were the most irritating ones (also apparent on the next Sherlock game, Nemesis).

On my backlog for this month! However, I have the Steam version. Anyone know if it's easy to patch with the US version? From what I read in the GOG forums, it's superior to the UK version.

I don't know about superior. From what I can tell most of the people saying the US version is better simply have nostalgia for that version because it's what they had when they were younger and for some people the "star power" of having Corey Feldman play the main character makes it better.
I have no nostalgia for either version, but I tend to prefer the original voice acting for most things including foreign films, anime etc. The US dub is fine but I wouldn't say it's objectively better.

Hey! Whenever you're done with it please drop a summary here, I have this game for ages but never got to play it due to fear of motion sickness. I'd like to know it it's worth the attempt :)

Sadly, not yet :/ but I will surely do after your recommendation. Spare time is a luxury right now and if I'm lucky I try to progress in REAH (which I've been playing in very short bursts since Christmas).

If you can find a way to patch it then obviously play whatever sounds better to you, but I wouldn't stress too much if you can't find a way to patch. I guess technically any patch you apply would be piracy since it would need to contain the copyrighted voice files... not that anyone would care. :P
How is REAH? It's one of those games that I saw images of in a magazine when I was a Riven obsessed child. It stuck in my memory for a long time but even though I've bought it on GOG now I still haven't played it. :P
Another one of those 'missed' games from my childhood is (off topic as it's not first person) Nightlong: Union City Conspiracy, which I had a demo of.

Honestly, I haven't got that far (just managed to get out of the first area). From what I encountered so far (puzzle-wise) I can tell that the game is more on the hardcore side of adventure games. If you like Timelapse or RHEM you will feel right at home. I'd say it's a bit like Riven but with much of the wandering around replaced by trying to solve puzzles.
In terms of design don't expect much, the puzzles are well integrated in the environment but you may also feel that they're there for the sake of solving. But I had that in mind so I don't really care and I enjoy it! The acting is, well, unprofessional and it shows :P There are also audio puzzles, in case you are concerned.
The only thing I had to get used to is the navigation which requires you to click & drag mouse to rotate the camera. Other than that I didn't find any flaw so far (I just hope moon logic does not jump in to ruin yet another game for me).

Same here, I always wanted to play that game and never got to it. I remember magazines praising its story (and graphics) back then!

FYI: I contacted GOG support about it yesterday and they replied that they would process the issue. They also contacted me again earlier today and it seems they fixed it! Now the game is no longer tagged as "FPP" :) It's nice to see support people listening and acting fast.

Hello again everyone! It's time for some more 1st person puzzly mystery...

Rhiannon: Curse Of The Four Branches
You are invited to look after a remote farmhouse by a friend who lives there with his wife and their daughter, Rhiannon. They had to get away for some time because Rhiannon's behavior changed, supposedly due to her being alone most of the time and away from friends. As you explore the farm and the surroundings you discover that there's a much deeper and darker reason behind Rhiannon's mood change.
The game is based on some very interesting Welsh myths and the output is a very believable story. As you progress, you find notes and diary pages that slowly reveal what Rhiannon was experiencing. The atmosphere is great and does not rely on sound effects to become intense, instead it is built slowly in your mind as you discover more in the otherwise calm surroundings of the farm. The puzzles are very nice and not too hard, mostly inventory-based (note: LOTS of items), as well as some more "environmental" puzzles (e.g. collect a number of different tree leaves scattered around). I'd say an average playthrough should take around 14 hours.
The visuals are nicely pre-rendered and animated. The audio is also nice, not outstanding but still helping the atmosphere build-up with calm background music, ambience and sounds. Navigation is in slideshow style, just like Shivers, Myst, Dark Fall, etc.
Overall, this is one of those games that I do remember fondly even years after I played it. It has all the good elements you would expect from such a game, with the only flaw being that there is no sequel :) (OK, the story comes to a closure, no cliffhangers, but still there could be at least a spiritual successor if I may say ;) )

So, I started playing today for a few minutes. First impressions are really good (love it), but if you get motion sickness with Doom, for example, this will probably give you the same.

I think the Steam version is the US version. Putting GOG/UK version on my wishlist for sure, because GOG and also because I wanna compare.

Edit: Nope, it's the UK version as well. But from what little I've seen on YouTube of the US version, I prefer the UK one.

Ah, I think I may have bought this at some point but I can't remember which store and I'm not sure if I backed it up. What I saw of it made me think of Dark Fall/Barrow Hill/Baron Wittard. I dunno if there's some "British adventure game" style, but they all seem to have it. :P
