Over the decades, gaming has expanded in ways people could never have imagined, but one genre that has continued to stand the test of time while still growing is the action-adventure genre.

For almost as long as there have been video games, action-adventure games and their real-time action, puzzles, and exploration have intrigued gamers all over the world. While we could spend years talking about our favorite ones, today, we wanted to focus on one that is close to our hearts – Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain.

With the game coming to GOG.COM during our Anniversary event, we wanted to take a trip down memory lane to look at what made this game so spectacular.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain tells an epic story
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain takes place in Nosgoth, a fantasy world filled with humans and vampires. In this world, pillars are tied to the literal health of the world. The Pillars of Nosgoth are protected by humans, but prior to your introduction to the world, some bad things (to put it mildly) have happened, and now vampires are being hunted down.

Of course, the remaining vampires didn’t like this very much and retaliated, killing many of the guardians. One thing led to another as revenge plot after revenge plot takes place, eventually causing the Pillars and their guardians to become corrupted.

This is where you, Kain (voiced by Simon Templeman), come in. After being resurrected, you are tasked with putting an end to these corrupted guardians in order to, hopefully, bring order back to the world of Nosgoth.

So, as you can see, if you are a fan of big stories, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain definitely has you covered!

Hack n’ slash, puzzle-solving goodness
While a great story can be enough to carry a game, thankfully, Legacy of Kain also excels in classic action-adventure gaming, fighting, and puzzle-solving!

Using a top-down perspective, you’ll explore large outdoor areas and crawl your way through dungeons, exploring, fighting off creatures and humans, and collecting new weapons and armor that change up your gameplay.

And because you are a vampire, your health will continuously (but slowly) decrease the longer you go without blood. You can top up your health meter by taking out humans and creatures with red blood, but make sure to avoid the tainted black blood because it will poison you!

In addition to plenty of weapons to choose from, you will also get some valuable spells to dispatch your enemies. Then, on top of that, you can even shapeshift into a couple of different forms to help with your quest.

Journey into the big world of Legacy of Kain
If you like top-down action games or just want something with an epic story and world-building, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain could be exactly what you are looking for. It features a memorable story and characters and provides plenty of exploration and action for people that prefer that.

On top of that, you can celebrate GOG’s 13th anniversary with us by playing a true classic making a comeback on modern PCs.

What do you think? Plan on checking this game out now that it is on GOG.COM? Let us know down in the comments!

Swedrami: If a localised version isn't offered it means that either the rights situation is still tangled up or the current rights holder to the localised version can't be reached/negotiated with/isn't interested in allowing the localised version in question to be offered.
That's not always the case. Sometimes GOG gets the rights but not the files. So it would be great if GOG could tell us if they own the rights since some community members could provide the files. This happened in the past already so it is possible.

MarkoH01: Is it possible to get the German version for Blood Omen as well? Do you even own the rights for it?

SmollestLight: I will ask tomorrow :)
Thanky you. If you own the rights but missing the files I know a guy who could provide those.

WoW!

This is an AAA-level release and the most important and valuable game that I bought all year!

I never was able to get the abandonware to work, and I missed playing this game when I lost my consoles so many years ago, this will be the first time I played it on PC; Thanks for bringing this over finally, my collection is now complete!

EDIT: The Hitman fiasco is still a blight and I would hope you will turn it around otherwise this release will be tarnished... please GoG do the right thing!

So this is the proverbial shiny keys to jingle in front of everyone's faces to make them forget you just willingly sold a game full of DRM'd content is it?

I had a sliver hope in my mind that you simply, somehow did an incompetent job evaluating that release, now I know you did it deliberately right before this dropped. Absolutely shameless.

groze: Well... I bought it, for completion's sake, even though I loathe Denis Dyack and his defunct a-single-good-title studio, Silicon Knights (that's Eternal Darkness, by the way), just because I love what Amy Hennig and Crystal Dynamics did with the IP he founded.
avatar
Leroux: Just great. I was happy and satisfied to finally see Blood Omen here, and now I really crave Eternal Darkness and I'm sad to find out it's Gamecube only ... XD

Why the hate for the studio though? (Honest question, I don't know a lot about them.)
Just look for the history of the studio and you'll get a glimpse at how unprofessional, greedy and downright bad they were. Not to mention their penchant for edgelordiness, but that's a pet peeve of mine, not something they can *factually* be accused of. Denis Dyack couldn't direct a game to save his life, he got lucky with Blood Omen and Eternal Darkness, but that's it. The guy represents everything I think is wrong with the video game industry; he panders to gatekeepers and conservatives but won't even deliver on his promises to those types of gamers. Plays all the nostalgia strings, three failed attempts at a crowd-funded Eternal Darkness spiritual successor with two different companies (both now defunct) -- I know this because I was there and I dealt with the man personally. The only good thing to come out of that were the few honest-to-god friends I made while watching that trainwreck. He started yet another "entertainment studio", which was supposed to "bind video games, cinema and TV together", but nothing ever came out of that, and the studio shut down as quietly as possible. Now, since we hadn't been able to legally purchase and play Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain on PC until today, he created YET another studio and they're working on a "spiritual successor" to Blood Omen, except it's a F2P MMO ARPG with "asynchronous gameplay" and twitch integration. Oh, they're also forced to use Amazon's proprietary engine, because I guess it was easier to just become an Amazon Games studio.

So, yeah, that's basically the gist of why I hate Denis Dyack and Silicon Knights with a passion. That, and the fact Blood Omen is a mediocre Diablo/Zelda-clone for edgelords, and he's plucking the Legacy of Kain nostalgia strings without being honest enough as to mention the Legacy of Kain game he's mentioning is the first Blood Omen and not the Soul Reaver arc ones, all the while people flood their Discord and their forums thinking that's the spiritual sequel they're working on. Dude is a liar and a paragon of greed, mismanagement and abuse.

Robette: "...expansive world containing more than 100 hours of intense, blood-sucking, spell-casting gameplay."

What? Is there one zero too many?
IGN's review says 50 to 70 hours of gameplay.

they didn't "forget" they're just not actively boycotting.

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

Could you look into possibly adding the German (or any other, for that matter) localisation for both Elvira's as well?
Thanks in advance.
Instabought! Great to see this classic here, after all this time! Glad the rights mess got sorted, and we can enjoy this masterpiece once again!

I haven't played it, but howlongtobeat says it takes 12-15 hours, and I usually find that website relatively accurate.
avatar
Lifthrasil: Damn. Why do you release this game only after allowing a always-online DRMed game here? I would have bought this instantly, if you were still a DRM-FREE store, GOG.
avatar
Aemenyn: The gods demanded a sacrifice before allowing this game to return from purgatory.
Kain refused the sacrifice. What are you, little soul? Locked in eternal limbo...

You also need to wait for proper moon phases to unlock several doors in order to obtain 100% completion, so that definitely adds to it.

Good that it's patched, but, this work had already been done by modders for free, right?
I'd get it if they manage to make it multilang and on sale for about 1 euro. I'm not in a urge to hand my money to a corporation that exploits vulnerable people with loot boxes for an over-priced game just because it was missing until now.
By the way, if you like a 2D isometric gothic game with vampires check out Vampire's Fall: Origins. It has strong Kain vibes and looks like a lot of fun, I've played a little on Android but I don't like touch controls and small screen for a game of this kind.
I really don't want to spoil your fun, just ask yourself if you feel compelled to get it just because you need to compulsory complete the series here or will you really enjoy it and don't you feel it's overpriced when the rest of the games are here for 1 euro.

yep, beating a game and exploring every nook and cranny of it are two separate things.

It could be either one, which is why I want GOG to explain why they think Hitman GOTY is DRM-FREE.
