Update 23 – Physical Edition, revealed!

crpgbook.files.wordpress.com/2018/11/crpg_standardedition.jpg

Today, I’m proud to reveal the physical edition of the CRPG Book, to be published by Bitmap Books, creators of the most beautiful and polished books on video games!

This edition will be hardcover, fully proof-read, feature new reviews, several updates and the amazing cover artwork you see above, done by artist Jan Pospíšil.

This is still a non-profit work, so all these updates will be later freely available for download, and ALL the money I would make from this will instead be donated to Vocação, an award-winning NGO in Brazil that helps kids and teenagers from poor communities to advance their education and earn a job, giving them the tools to improve their lives and of the people around them.

The pre-orders will begin on January 14, with a very special limited edition also available! You can sign up here to be informed.

Cheers, and thanks to everyone who helped me take this project so far!

Looking forward to it! Got a space on the shelves all picked out. :) Felipepepe also added this when pressed for details:

I still can't reveal everything, we are still preparing a deluxe edition with poster and a few other goodies that are still pending, but the book was fully proof-read, a bunch of screenshots were replaced for much better ones (for exemple, I recently replayed Witcher 2 in 4k) and updated the reviews with new information (like The Bard's Tale Trilogy remaster)

Great news! That's another must-buy for me.
How have I missed this until now? Checked and Dark Heart of Uukrul is in there, so I'm on board! Time to start reading...
Also, I will probably buy the physical edition, this is awesome!
Two days to go.
Will likely set one back the usual 30 quid (+ shipping except for within the UK) from the looks of it. Unless there's something really special about the 'special limited edition' that warrants a higher price point.

The CRPG Book: A Guide to Computer Role-Playing Games

This coming Monday – 14th January at 7am GMT, to be precise – we will be launching pre-orders for hotly-anticipated The CRPG Book: A Guide to Computer Role-Playing Games. As teased in our last update, we’ve devised a couple of editions of the book that should hopefully suit everyone's needs and budgets. Please note that there are only a limited amount of Collector’s Editions available and this edition will never be reproduced and is exclusive to the pre-order period. We strongly suggest ordering early to avoid disappointment. We are aiming to deliver all pre-orders in March 2019.

Standard Edition

The standard edition of The CRPG Book: A Guide to Computer Role-Playing Games is priced at £29.99/$39.99 and is essentially just the hardback book, shrink-wrapped.

Collector’s Edition

The Collector’s Edition of The CRPG Book: A Guide to Computer Role-Playing Games will come within a heavy-duty board slipcase with metallic gold branding on the fascia, rear and spine, then shrink-wrapped. Included with the book will be a set of goodies, such an A2 rolled poster of the Jan Pospíšil cover art, a gold foil blocked A4 Dungeon Map Pad, a branded pencil and a pack of 5 art postcards. The Collector’s Edition is priced at £49.99/$64.99 and, as mentioned above, will be a limited edition and exclusive to the pre-order period.

Where to pre-order

You can pre-order The CRPG Book: A Guide to Computer Role-Playing Games from www.bitmapbooks.co.uk and www.bitmapbooks.com. Our .com site is only for customers within the USA.

Shipping

As with all our books, we put great levels of attention into packaging to ensure they arrive with customers in pristine condition. All our shipping is tracked and you will receive a tracking number as soon as your order is shipped. Please note that the book is 528 pages long and weighs over 2kg, so sadly, the cost of shipping to some countries is not cheap. However, we’ve tried to keep prices as low as possible can and always prefer to ship signed-and-tracked for peace of mind.

Pre-order FAQs

You can add some of our other books to your pre-order if you wish, and benefit from combined (and therefore cheaper) shipping. The down-side is that the whole order will ship in March when the pre-order is ready. When pre-ordering from www.bitmapbooks.co.uk and www.bitmapbooks.com, the money is debited from your account when the order is placed but this can be cancelled at any point by simply emailing hello@bitmapbooks.co.uk and asking for a refund to be issued.

I'm so excited. :)
Ah finally the pre-order will be up tomorrow i'll try to grab one of these since i really
enjoyed the Commodore 64 - a visual Compendium.
Damn, I would absolutely love to get the Collector's Edition, but there's just no way I can afford that now. Maybe I'll buy the standard edition eventually. Cool nerdy stuff is always so damn expensive.
Pre-orders are live.
wow! thanks!
what a great project!

I'm torn about it. Been following the project for over four years now and told Felipe back in the day that I would definitely buy a physical copy of the book. Collector's editions are pretty much a standard for me...the only issue is, apart from the "heavy-duty board slipcase with metallic gold branding" I'm not interested in the extras (and I also just spent a large amount of money on games a week ago (read, multiples of what the CE costs)). Guess I will have to sleep over it for a few days.
As an aside, I don't even see an option to buy the collector's edition. That may be due to me not being able to allow shopify.com via NoScript because it turns the whole page white for whatever reason.

Be aware that even the standard edition currently has limited numbers. The guy behind the project had this to say:

'Actually, both editions are limited. My contract is that I can distribute the updated free ebook once they sell out - or after a certain amount of time has passed. ;)

So the ebook will return in 2019, the exact date depending on how fast the book sells.'

Ordered my Collectors Edition.

Looking forward to reading through it.

To be honest, reading and learning more about the history and the making of the classics games has been more interesting to me than actually playing a lot of the new games that are pretty generic.

You look at the classic games and the secrets and bonuses put in out of design care and passion, as opposed to now with games holding back content for loot boxes and using microtransactions for bonuses.

I am not saying every new game is bad - far from it - as I have thoroughly enjoyed playing Monster Hunter World, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Disgaea 5 and The Witcher III, among others - but they are becoming farther between.
