Nice, yeah I agree almost completely with this guy. It's like how we should care about the cold, flu etc. Clean yourself, eat right and exercise, stay at home if you're sick so you don't spread it. I think we should've locked ALL countries down from "day one": No travel to-from any country, etc.....and MAYBE we could've gotten this over with a lot faster and with less casualties.

Now we have to all suffer because of their inept handling of it and get the "evil eye" from our fellow humans if we don't follow every writ to the letter.

Thing is, in order for this to be effective now we'd likely need TOTAL LOCKDOWN and QUARANTINE for ALL....as in no one leaving their homes/yards much if at all for 3-4 weeks. People are STILL passing cash in stores(which isn't cleaned then handed out as change to others), people are still going outside to places with other people, etc....leading likely to more getting it even with "lockdowns".

That's what peer review is for - in serious science you will be called out for that, and your reputation will be gone - likely forever.
And that is why global warming deniers like Heartland Institute or EIKE have created their own little circles of "peer reviewers" outside the real scientific world - to make their shit look legit.
There even are publications like "Nature Science" (trying to sound like the renowned journals Nature and Science) where you can buy your "peer review".

I'll admit that there is sloppy peer review too, especially if your results are completely in line with the common consent and are no big surprise. But as soon as you have some controversial theory you're trying to support there will be reviewers who will try to take your paper apart and find any errors or flaws.

Science and the scientific method are the best thing available that we have of seriously scrutinised information regarding almost any topic. And that's because of the process for even getting your results out there - peer review. It not only routinely vets for clear bias, whether the results can be reproduced, but also opens up the paper for rebuttals and criticisism.

If people had more exposure to how absolutely brutally difficult it is to publish in a reputable high impact-ranking peer reviewed journal, I think people would stop spouting nonsense about 'common sense' trumping hard science, and 'flawed buddy buddy peer review'.

Case in point - the Imperial College study someone linked to earlier that got government's serious attention and policy changes have already been enacted because of it. Why? Because they know the university is not only the cream of the crop and those scientists are the world's foremost experts on the subject - they were also confident in the process of science validation.

This may seem like an appeal to authority, and it sort of is, but pointing out fallacies is silly at this point in crisis. And people appeal to authority all the time. When you go to your doctor about an illness, do you defer to his expert opinion and authority on medical matters? His years of education and training, coupled with his experience in the matter? Or do you go to a homeopathic practitioner who touts lemon juice as a remedy to all ailments under the Sun? Or do you start doing your own 'research' on the illness from the interwebz, and present your very 'common sense' treatment for yourself?

People defer to the opinion of experts all the friggin time. Partly because they will never either have the time to do their own research on the topic in any adequate way, or they will never be able to understand the nuances and indeed the research in any reasonable way, anytime soon. And that's fine. Because the probabilty of the experts being completely wrong is not only very low, but because science, the scientific method, and thus peer review, is the best we have - even though it's not perfect by any means.

People breaking quarantine here in HK. We've had maybe 30 imported cases. Whats annoying is that its not much to ask someone flying in to stay at home for 2 weeks but they're wandering around the city as usual. One restaurant voluntarily shut down to disinfect. One guy running around had a fever.

Friend said he saw another guy with a tag. 8 cops had to argue with him for 15 minutes before he went back to quarantine. All voluntary here.

Yes, because what we need is nations full of people who cannot figure things out for themselves and who have to defer to experts to tell them what to think and believe on things.

This originally had gotten past medical professionals, but they are now realizing that people that worked with patients but didn't show symptoms, sometimes had loss of senses and may indicate a carrier.

Why religious? You could just as easily say schools or PTA moms or golf club meetings. Most Churches I know of are having online prayer services and giving support to the community as best they can during these circumstances. The area I live in just had a tornado come through killing 19 people about two and a half weeks ago. Before the virus got to the point we see now. The area churches are supporting those families financially and with substenance, then are trying to help with the virus outbreak. Edit: My wifes Church was a designated place for families to come to identify lost loved ones (via photos, not as an actual morgue) in the aftermath of the tornado for instance.
