dr.schliemann: Greetings,
this might not be the right forum for discussing about a subject such like this one, but I ultimately decided to open a thread about COVID-19, the disease which is ultimately spreading around the world. My intention is to clarify, if needed, which impact this syndrome could have in your daily life.
Thanks for the thread so people can wish others well, give advice to stay safe, list new info as it become available, etc.....it is appreciated.
avatar
dr.schliemann: Café and restaurants open from 6 to 18 o'clock, with the order to maintaining a social distance of at least 1 meter.
How will people eat in enclosed spaces like that and maintain that distance? What about when people have to hand you your change/food?
avatar
dr.schliemann: Order to avoid any unnecessary movement and stay at home as much as possible, maintaining a social distance of at least 1 meter.
Thankfully for some of us "neets" this is very easy to follow.
avatar
dr.schliemann: However its mortality rate doesn't seem to be particularly high, especially on young people.
True(and not to alarm anyone), but it supposedly can reinfect people and the amount of people that need intensive care is over 15% or so.....those things alone are worth being mindful of, I think.
avatar
dr.schliemann: Please, follow the World Health Organization's basic protective measures against the new coronavirus:
- Wash your hands frequently;
- Maintain social distancing of at least 1 meter (3 feet);
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth;
- Practice respiratory hygiene, covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing;
- If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early, but don't go to the hospital directly;
- Stay informed and follow advice given by your healthcare provider.
Good advice...thanks for posting it for those who might need it. :)

(As for any naysayers like those below talking about such threads being bad.....it's best to ignore them....they tend to think they run/own the board/site and know how it should be run[i.e. back seat moderators].)

morolf: meh, imo this isn't strictly political (unless people bring their usual culture wars bs into it), more of an issue that will affect all of us in the coming weeks. I can certainly understand Dr. Schliemann's need to talk about it, this is an existential issue after all like never happened before in our lifetime.
This...this is an issue that affects the ENTIRE world and is of importance to many people no matter where they're from.....it's not some social media outrage nonsense or similar fluff that not many care about or need to know about

Doesn't actually seem to be that bad of a virus, like 90% of infected get over it and don't die, and those that do are probably the old or already healthy. Just another SARS.

Not at all a fan of governments mandating where citizens can go and then enforcing it with weapons, especially with no advance notice. People can self-isolate if they're concerned.

more like SARS^2

sars deaths <800 infected 8000
this
deaths 3000+ infected 100k+
so it is not just another sars
it also has 40% reinfecton rate
so be prepared guys

that makes no sense? do you think that quarantining a small infected portion to not infect the whole country is wrong cause you can live like a hermit anyway?

Read the post above/before by kai2.....there are two variants....one that is more widespread but less lethal, and one that is much more lethal and less widespread.

The problem is people do stupid sh*t(visit loved ones, etc....one guy even went to a sporting event in the US while sick) and sometimes they lose some/all rationality when faced with such, or they just don't care(some in other countries allegedly tried SPREADING it to others).

In such cases where an illness is easily spread/more lethal than normal, I am ok with such measures if done sparingly/for short periods of time to severely affected areas.

I find the misinformation being spread as dangerous as the virus itself: Well meaning(?) people sharing facebook posts with idiotic and harmful advice. Which is why I feel even posts in this thread could be detrimental (unless explicitly referencing serious news organisations, or health organisations).

Also, I'm curious with the toilet paper craze now...what are people stockpiling toilet paper for? What are they doing with it that they weren't doing before? Why do they need more? It's so weird!

Let me ask you this, should you worry that there is even a slight possibility that soon your money might not be worth more than toilet paper is now, wouldn't you then rather have exchanged at least some of the former to a huge stockpile of the latter while you still could?

Agreed, any misinformation(accidental or otherwise) can be detrimental to some....that is why I think people should take all info they get on the outbreak with a grain of salt unless it comes from those in the know(health organizations/doctors/vetted news sites/etc) or is common sense stuff like wash hands/stockpile medicine +canned foods+water a bit/etc.

If it could still help someone(with information/tips/advice/well wishes/comforting words) I think the benefits outweigh any possible negatives from such posts.

It's one of the things people see as being "civilized" if one has it, and if SHTF(sh*t hits the fan) people want to stock up on certain things before hand to be "set" in case they must stay in their homes.

Stuff like TP, basic medicines(over the counter stuff), water, canned foods(and non perishable foods that keep for a long time and are easy to make/eat), hand sanitizer/soap, batteries, etc.

No, I don't think that there is a conceivable chance that COVID19 will result in my money being worth less than toilet paper.

Do you feel otherwise? Do you envision a near future where people are getting paid in squares of toilet paper, and trading them for food and rent?

This.....in a hypothetical shtf scenario, paper money wouldn't be worth as much to people as tangible needed goods(like those I mentioned in the bolded bit above in post 23) and other commodities.

(Also in such situations people would likely make "runs on the banks" and the banks would then likely freeze people's accounts anyways)

If ANY situation got to a worse enough point where economies fell apart(a bit or in full), paper money would hold much less(if any) value....that is likely what that user meant.

As for trading stuff for food/rent: What do you think our ancestors did before money was created? And what do you think people would do if systems collapsed and people needed to barter among themselves? Do you think anyone has much use for pieces of paper with pictures of famous people/etc on them during such situations?

A word of advice: If you want this thread to not get axed by mods, you should perhaps refrain from anything political(even if a joke post).

Shitting in the shower is a funny thing, everyone does it but nobody wants to admit it.

Besides, the dollar is basically toilet paper already. People are just not aware of it yet.
