Man, my ex is a really mean and nasty person. I deeply regret having to interact with her at all (but am obligated to where it regards my kid).
Well fuck. My microsoft live account has been hacked by some prick who changed the password locking me out and then helped himself to a 360 game on demand at my expense, expense which was considerable because microsoft love themselves some regional pricing discrimination. So now my account is suspended pending investigation knocking my 360 and msn offline and leaving my bank account a hundred bucks overdrawn at a time when I can least afford it.

To make matters worse, the game this twat bought was FIFA12 which is only slightly more appealing to me than a kick in the bollocks

But what sort of tool does that? He's clearly not out to cause chaos or he'd never have stopped at "only" $100. He's clearly not gotten my credit card details because the only thing he bought was the MS points he used on FIFA and he bought them for MY account rather than his own and instead of just causing chaos and running away laughing like the mindless maggot ridden rotting donkeycock he is, he sits down using my gamertag and PLAYS FIFA, getting at least 2 achievements before MS locked my account...

Can you contact your bank to see if they'll investigate the charge? I do my stuff at a credit union, so it may be different, but when I had fraudulent charges, they actually just flat out cancelled the charge on my account.
Nah its not worth the hassle, the bank would want to cancel the card to cover their own arse and I'm 100% certain that the card isn't compromised, its just that my xbox account was authorised to use it for purchases and this wanker did that. I'm keeping a close eye on things just in case there are more charges but there's been nothing yet

MS are going to refund any lost money anyway so its just a matter of waiting. I'll go & tell them whats happened tomorrow but I doubt there'll be any real difference in the situation

This happened to someone I know about 2 weeks ago, MS is investigating. I think there's been a rash of these lately. You'll get your cash back I think and won't be stuck with a terri-bad game.
I gotta say that I'm a little peeved ( actually downright disgusted) that I don't think everybody here actually knows what an ad hominem attack is, so I'm just going to throw this out there:

Geez, with a name like CaptainGyro you *would* make a post like that!

Sorry, couldn't resist:)
A family in our neighborhood, who have been legitimately like family with us for almost two decades just lost their son. Don't know why he died, but it could have been complications due to heart disease (both parents are in their 70's).

I wasn't too close with the son, but the parents have been around for most of my life, so I'm somewhat upset. When I told my "good friend" on AIM about what had happened, he replied with "Bummer :("

Is it too much to ask from a friend for some sympathy or condolences instead of being brushed off? Am I asking too much? It feels like I get more support from people on these forums then from someone who is supposed to be one of my closest friends.

Here's a very good recent example of it:

I know from other threads that Timppu IS full of shit when it comes to Steam and that he is nothing but a Steam hater who loves conspiracy-theories about the big bad Steam Corp. So we can dismiss most of what he says out of hand
Seems to fit the definition behind your links quite perfectly, e.g.:

Abusive ad hominem (also called personal abuse or personal attacks) usually involves insulting or belittling one's opponent in order to attack his claim or invalidate his argument...
This was especially fitting example in that Wikipedia article:

"John Choi's argument on LeBron James' failures in the NBA finals aren't worth reading, everyone knows he is a "LeBron" hater."

LeBron hater, Steam hater... :D How can I even be called a Steam-hater anyway, when I've said many times that Steam is quite a good platform for e.g. server-based multiplayer games? I guess any criticism will sound like Hitler-level hatred to some of the most rapid fans.

Uh yeah... I'm not the person who said that. That was jepsen and he actually stood up for your argument in that thread. Why did you remove the part where he said that you had a point? That wasn't an ad hominem attack

I suggest you keep reading those links

CaptainGyro: Uh yeah... I'm not the person who said that. That was jepsen and he actually stood up for you in that thread.
Uh yeah... which is kinda what I said in the original message:

As for the rest of your meta-discussion, you and Jepsen seem to be overly sensitive about any criticism towards Steam, something that this discussion was not even about. Yeah I know you hate me because in the past I've raised some painful issues about Steam (hence all the childish name-calling and ad hominem attacks), but I guess you should just try to get over it.
So what were you arguing about, again?

Yeah, I can give it to you that you "just" descent to childish name-calling when you get outraged as you are proven wrong, expanding the discussion into personal meta-discussion having nothing to do with the original discussion. Fortunately I feel that is your problem, not mine. You are the one making an ass of yourself, not me. :)

EDIT: and as you edited your message afterwards: yes, it clearly walks like a duck: "he is a Steam hater so we can dismiss most of what he says out of hand...". If that doesn't fit the definition of an ad hominem attack to you, then I wonder what does. It is almost verbatim the same as one of the examples in the Wikipedia article you so willingly provided. :D

You just called me an ass and I'm the one who is resorting to name calling. Uh-huh.

and geez, I dunno how I could think that you were accusing of me of using ad hominem attack when you're directly talking to me and say " I know you hate me ( hence all the childish name calling and ad hominem attacks)
Boy am I red in the face and I feel like an ass.

PS-seriously read those links. all of them

No, I said you are making an ass of yourself with your personal meta-discussions, when you run out of factual points. You are grasping at straws now.

In English language, "you" can refer also to many persons, which should be quite clear from the quote I presented above.
It can also refer to a singular person! Crazy huh?

Also that blog entry, which was only someone's opinion, not a clear definition of the term itself? Was it written by you?

Yes I read them, obviously much better than you because unlike you, I was able to provide direct quotes from them supporting my point.
