I'm mildly miffed! Not to any real degree but I was planning to get the fancy version of gears 3 so I'd have the shiny medal and nice flag to hang up in my media room when we move house. Bit of research seems to indicate the flag is about the size of the cloth map you get with some RPGs. Far less impressive than I wanted but on the plus side it saves me 50 bucks

CaptainGyro: Everytime he posts I want to be an asshole and say " Why the hell should I care about your ice cream bar or chocolate milk or whatever? You seem like you have to much time on your hands, Quit being a lazy freeloading fatass and get a job already".

So... is there a polite way to say that?
The way you did, I'd be far less polite about it. People do sometimes need a kick in the head to get them moving

Hawk52: I think I caught myself before I was in too much trouble...but I don't think this is very good.
Its a bloody good thing you spotted it now, it means its not too deeply ingrained and you can work on changing it

Deus_Ex: All my friends wanna get drunk and I'd like to stay sober for at least a week or two. If I don't join their parties then we have no mutual conversation topics... Because I wasn't out there doing crazy, stupid and funny things while drunk like everyone else.
I used to be like that (didn't necessarily want to go out to drink with friends, but many times still did just to keep in touch with them), but for some reason nowadays I'm e.g. looking forward to the incoming cottage weekend with my high-school time friends (wives and girlfriends are left home) where we just eat good food, drink alcohol and talk shit. I knew there was a reason why I've kept that Laphroaig bottle untouched for so many years.

Maybe the reason is that these happenings are so seldom (like a couple times a year or so), while in the university etc. people were expecting you to go out every weekend, and sometimes also on the week.

Double-edged sword, because on the other hand it is good to keep in touch with friends, because if you don't, they will stop calling you at all "because you wouldn't come anyway".

Are you doing anything else with them? Ask them if they want to go play football together, try wall climbing, go watch sports together, or something that you'd enjoy? As a matter of fact, one of my friends used to gather "retrogaming parties", fits perfectly the GoG theme.

CaptainGyro: anyways, on facebook, everytime I see him make a post on facebook (which is often), it's always about something stupid.
Does someone ever say anything smart on Facebook? I thought its main purpose is so that people can tell their "friends" what they are eating right now and that next they are going to toilet. But I wouldn't know really, I've stayed out of Facebook probably for similar reasons I've stayed out of World of Warcraft.

Of course this happens also on discussion forums like GoG, but in a more controlled manner.
of course people say smart things on facebook...if you have smart friends

Aaahh, the joys of being a student in Finland (and everywhere else apparently).

Adzeth: You can stay forever sober, be a Finnish student and still have friends (and even have conversations with them). Finding a proper sober friend might take a few years, though. In my university, I've also learned that you can have mutual conversation topics with people who drink heavily when you don't. They just might not appreciate some views on their drinking and how "necessary" it is.

Do drunks actually do funny things? I once listened to a long explanation about how some guy was drunk, and then he walked around town and it was "sooo funny". When I asked him if he learned this "ability to walk" under the influence, and if he replicate it sober, he got annoyed at me for some reason. There was also this one guy, who told me about how he smashed his wife's expensive family heirloom thing, because he was drunk and "the bitch kept complaining about his drinking". This was supposed to be a funny and righteous story, apparently. Then a third guy told me about how he went around stealing people's stuff when under the influence. This was supposed to be funny as well. I don't think I've ever heard of an actually funny thing that drunks would do.
ugh... those are the sort of men who give us other men a bad name.

My two main gripes right now:

1. My trusty old XP laptop which I think I've owned for 6 years or so seems to be finally breaking up. The screen jiggles sometimes especially when scrolling a window fast, or playing Warcraft 2 BNE (for some reason it doesn't happen at all or that much on other games like Baldur's Gate or Wheel of Time). The jiggle usually goes away if I lift or push the machine a bit, at least for awhile. I noticed this the first time last Friday.

I think this may be related to overheating, so yesterday I bought a can of pressure air, and also a laptop cooler, to see if I can get some dust out and whether this is really a heat problem. I haven't had time to use them yet.

It shouldn't matter that much because I have also another old laptop in use, and also my newer Win7 (work) laptop, but the thing is that I have quite a few (maybe 20) Win9x games carefully installed, patched, modded, and played on this laptop. So it means I'll have to do that again to another comp, transfer the savegames and make sure they work etc. I admit that for these kinds of situations the "cloud gaming" makes things much easier...

The Win7 laptop will become my main PC now, and of course I also fear that I can't get some of those games running on it, e.g. Carmageddon 2 with a Glide wrapper?

Anyway, it is my trusty friend, this is almost like losing a dog, except that it does not bark nor shit around.

2. Playing Wheel of Time (a fantasy FPS with slight tactical overtones), and now I am on the third mission ("The Bowels of Shadar Logoth"). In the beginning parts of the level, on the left, there's a dead end with a grate behind which you can see some more ammo, so it definitely looks like a secret that you should be able to access. But, I don't see any way to do that, and even the walkthrough by Tim Warren does not seem to mention it.

There's a mention of it in "GameFAQs The Wheel of Time(1999) (PC) Cheats-Glitches FAQ by Demandred82" secrets part, but you are told to access it either with a "GHOST" cheat which lets you go through the walls, or a "Shift"-spell which is not available on that level (that spell is very level specific, it is usually provided only before some puzzle on the same level, so AFAIK you can't take them with you from earlier levels).

Damn it, I don't want to proceed until I either know how to access that place without cheats, or know for sure that it can't be reached, but is a mere red herring. I didn't find any Youtube videos of that level either, for some other levels yes. I already went inside it with the cheat once, there were some ammo/spells, and at least one enemy. I couldn't locate any altenative ways inside besides the grate.

Finally found a woman who seems cool and I was thinking of actually asking her out today but then when we were talking she tells me she's moving interstate fairly soon. In truth I wasn't expecting any result anyway but I was giving serious thought to trying.

No thanks, just had popcorn
I had one of my wisdom tooth taken out prior to the weekend (wanted to do more than one but the doc advised against it...). So I'm sitting at home playing some Deus Ex (the original) because I finally have to time to even think about playing - until my girlfriend wants to "come over" and "look after me" which results in a ban of computer games because they "increase blood pressure" and that's "not good" for me apparently... Pretty much the only thing that increased my blood pressure over the weekend was arguing with her about this.

Now the weekend / sick time is over and I'm back to my daily two hour commute + work...

loneliness is when you have all these horrible feelings that you can't express to anyone, because nobody else could possibly understand or help.

Guess that's why you pray :P
