500+ deals up to 90% off, $3 mystery games, and free games just for shopping.

A jocund flame swallows up the cold, cold streams of outside air. The holidays are coming, and everyone begins to feel a little more generous, a little more kind, and a little bit giddy. We're feeling it too, because this time around, winter came to GOG.com before it was cool.

The Holiday Ninja Squirrel (have you met her yet?) brings a generous surprise for all with $3 Mystery Games from the GOG.com catalog, each worth between $6.99 and $34.99. These games won't be part of the regular sale lineup, and unowned games will be prioritized to minimize repeats. We're starting out with a pool of 50+ games, but we'll be adding more throughout the sale - we'll let you know when that happens.

djdarko: Are any of the games going to come back on sale before the Winter Sale is over?
avatar
mrkgnao: The working assumption is that all are bound to return. I seem to remember GOG writing something to that effect on day 1.
OK, thanks. I keep seeing 1 game at a time come up that I want, and yesterday Guacamelee was a no-brainer at $1.49, but for some reason I thought I had more than 24 hours before it went off.

guppy44: I'm still wondering about the Avernum, Avadon and Drod games from yesterday. I didn't buy them as I wasn't around in time, but there's a chance they may come around again. I'm really not sure what they're similar to? Honestly, they're a bunch of new-to-me games so I don't know.

zlep: Avernum and Avadon are old-school isometric RPGs, drawing their inspiration from '90s CRPGs. They're far more text-heavy than most games (even other RPGs). Very worthwhile if you like the genre, but don't expect top-notch graphics or sound - they're made by a committed one-man dev team.

Be aware that the two newest Avernums (Escape From The Pit and Crystal Souls) aren't sequels; they're remakes of the first two games from the Complete Saga to bring them up to his current standards (in line with Avernum 6 and the Avadon games). Story-wise, the Complete Saga does indeed contain the whole thing, so it's great value for money, but the first two games look obviously woeful compared to their snazzier remakes (if you look at the screenshots on the Complete Saga gamepage, 1 & 2 are the ones that have the name of the game permanently plastered across the top of the screen).

DROD (Deadly Rooms Of Death) is... very hard to describe, and not really similar to any other game I've encountered. Thematically it's a dungeon crawler, with potions, secret passages and NPCs, but the gameplay is pure puzzle game. The movements of the enemies are completely deterministic, it's all turn-based, and rooms will reset if you leave them until you manage to clear them of enemies.

Screenshots don't do justice to the cleverness of this game. Here's a Youtube playlist of the second game to give you an idea of whether it's for you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nkO64_Xc5k&list=PLBk6-z6v3pDKag06KlQN3uun312_7NBB_

Early levels are a bit bare (to teach you the ropes) and often exposition-heavy (there is actually a storyline) so if you think the rooms in the first video look too straightforward for interest, you may want to flick through a later episode to get a look at some of the more interesting rooms.
Thank you for the thorough explanation of the games! I had been watching gameplay footage and I just couldn't think of any game similar to, well, any of these titles. They look unique.

And thank you for the clarification on the Complete Saga and the updates. I was wondering what the difference was between all of these.

I guess I have a few days of new games before they may or may not come back around for the last 24-48 hours, so we'll see. Between the Fall Sale a couple of weeks ago and this sale so far my library has expanded something crazy. :)

mrkgnao: The QTEs are really really trivial. Most of them are of three types:
1) Press the same non-random button (say X) many times to fill some meter. Basically, button-mashing to simulate exertion.
2) Press the same non-random button (say X) many times to fill some meter, then end by pressing a different non-random button (say Y) once when the meter fills up.
3) Press a single button when prompted (classic QTE), but the button often makes sense, e.g. left/right arrow to move left/right.
That doesn't sound too bad, I suppose. Thanks for the info.
wish they would give out store credit instead of games...

every single time they have an sale i either already bought the games or they gave them away for free at some point.

they really need to give more options...
Good stuff.
I recommend that everyone go buy Hotline Miami 1+2 now, they are some of the most thrilling, narratively intoxicating and musically incredible games out there.

What is the highest resolution Hotline Miami supports?
The northern winds will make dead walkers rise

What's that supposed to mean? I bet "Dead Walkers" means "The Walking Dead".
LOL. The Nordic build your own bundle banner shows Darksiders 2+Complete DLC Pack. :D

Yay, beloved Jack Keane 2 is in bundle :)
Still nothing for me.
Of course the Nordic build your own bundle doesnt feature the Nordic games that are on my wishlist. :/
It would be really nice if separate soundtracks weren't sold as DLC requiring to buy the game itself.
Uhm... pointing the mouse over the Nordic Bundle show the (original verison of) Darksiders 2, yet there is no Darksiders 2 inlcuded in the number.

Edit: Ninja'd again by the Fact Cat.

Can anybody confirm that the GOG version of MX vs. ATV Unleashed does run under Linux/Wine?

The retail version of the game has mixed ratings on WineHQ and I already have two other moto racer games which are supposed to run under Wine, but do not run ...
