Back in August last year I ran a giveaway in support of Linux (The Big "Try Linux" GOG Game Giveaway), with the aim of encouraging & helping anyone interested in Linux to give it a try.

Everything here is officially supported on Linux except for The Witcher and Morrowind (and both of those run well in Wine). In the case of Morrowind, I've included that in order to promote OpenMW which does run natively on Linux (& 0.38 is due out soon). OpenMW supports Windows and Mac too so everyone should take a look at it :)

To enter, you simply need to post here listing the games you want in order of preference. Feel free to enter for as many as you're interested in; only one prize can be awarded per winner. You do not need to use or try Linux to enter.

The giveaway will end on 17/01/2016 at about 20:00 UTC

Rules:
- You must have at least 15 rep to be eligible to win
- Winners will be selected randomly after the giveaway ends
- Please only enter for games that you don't already have
- Please only enter for games that you're interested in/intend to play and that your system can run
- Keys are for your own use only/not to be traded (except for leftovers from multi-game keys which may be re-gifted but not traded)
- Each winner will receive one prize
- Prizes will be awarded according to order of preference and the remaining prizes
- Any keys not redeemed within one week after being awarded will either be given to another entrant or used for a future giveaway

Also, there's no way in heck I'm switching to Linux or even trying it out. I don't know the first thing about code, and I don't feel like making everything incompatible, especially as a student.

I’m in for Victor Vran, it looks like a game that could finally get me to let my Diablo 2 Amazon take a break...

Oh, and I second your advice to all Morrowind lovers to give a try to OpenMW, its boost in performances since they switched to another rendering engine is impressive!

Not sure about the question thingy... maybe to gather more attention. Though "Giveaway" on it's own usually should do the job.

No need to switch completely, you can always have a Windows + Linux Dualboot (pretty sure OP might be able to explain it better though and provide links), so there shouldn't be really any major incompatibility risk (as you should be able to run most things in Wine), and even then, you can always boot up with windows if you need it.

Or could ironically Linux be the puzzle that finally scares even the Puzzlemaster away. :P

It just seems like a waste of my time. Too many games are incompatible, and I see no big benefits other than getting to code my own operating system, which I already said I can't do.

Very nice giveaway I must say. I'm using Linux for last 7 years in dual boot with Windows for now. To be fair I only boot Windows up once a week to update internet security or maybe play something that doesnt work in Linux.

Started with Ubuntu, tried Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Crunchbang, Arch, Debian, Manjaro and at the end landed at Linux Mint 17.3 with which im very satisfied.

While some people are scarred of the terminal usage on Linux systems it does speed up things in comparison to graphical environments but those are more convenient to use.

Eitherway I'm in for (in order of preference):

-Satellite Reign
-Retro City Rampage
-Transistor

Edit: also thanks for the xkill shortcut creation. This was the only thing I missed in Linux since ctr-alt-delete don't work there. I had to many cases of programs freezing and wasn't to kill them and had to reset the pc.

Nope, you don't need to code your own OS, and no need to be an tech expert.either (it's actually far easier than people make it often out to be, all it takes is a bit of adaptation and some time getting used to it)

What you are probably thinking of are some very specific builds that allow you much more / complete control over your OS (but these were never designed for beginners in the first place, try rather looking at Mint)

I would say it's definitively worthwhile, and OP gave some good basic help /tips on how to start. At latest when M$ keeps going even farther with their current shenanigans and Win 7 (and possibly 8 / 8.1, as I've never used those) go the way of XP, that of the Dodo... having alternatives / not being at the mercy of one big corporation is always a good thing ;)

Do give it a try. You don't need to code or do anything by typing in Linux for some time now. You can just use graphical installers or the software manager which is like windows store. Gog delivers linux games with scripts that install the games basically the same as if you were using windows. Basically just install and next, next and finished.

Terminal is only needed if you really wan't to use it or you wan't to install some software that is not in the default repositories (aka software download point).

As always, I'm going to stick to WIn 7 for as long as it's viable. After that... I really don't know. If it ain't broken- don't fix it. And Win 7 works fine for me. And yet I know eventually it'll have to go. Ah well, there's still time.

I've been using Linux as my Primary OS since 2006, and I've been almost completely Windows free for a couple of years now. I do have a VirtualBox windows install for the one thing that I need windows for: Income Tax Software.

Didn't make any Linux progress since your last giveaway, but haven't given up on it either. In a year or so, I plan to begin designing a video game, at which point I believe I will need to get myself both a Linux computer and a Mac. That might be the incentive I need to make the Linux my main one (or not).
