drmike: That's why a lot of tooth pastes have it as an ingredient. :)

I;m amazed this thread hasn't been attacked by bots yet.

So.... professional baseball player?

yep and self checkin screens at airports :D
forget all the crap

use coconut oil, baking soda, coarse salt, and turmeric

soak your teeth for 10 minutes, and then brush normally (with non-toxic toothpaste! like dr. bronners or earthpaste or clay or a simple coconut oil+baking soda mix)

do it a few times over a week

but whitening is more a vanity thing and less a hygiene thing (though they CAN be related, of course)

be more concerned with healthy teeth, not with if they're yellow or not

Oh man! Are you cleaning your teeth or making a curry?!
you can try over the counter whiteners, there are many. dentists of course will advocate their own systems (money mak
ers) but i found many over the counter stuff works just as well. read lots of reviews and start with the low rated ones 1st.

be aware that many whitening toothpastes or systems and excessive brushing also damage enamel and you may end up with weak / sensitive teeth which is worse than cosmetic whiteness
Oil pulling with coconut oil.

A teaspoon of organic coconut oil in your mouth every morning and just swish around for 15-20 mins then spit out and rinse. You will see noticeably whiter teeth in a week, brilliantly white teeth in about 3 weeks.

Everyone I know where I live uses coconut oil. I've used it for the last 10 years and am constantly asked why my teeth are so white. Haven't been to a dentist in at least 8 years as my teeth are perfect. The last time I did, the dentist said he'd never seen teeth with zero plaque like mine and wanted to know what I did.

Coconut oil is brilliant for teeth and oral hygiene. Gets rid of bacteria and plaque and whitens your teeth. Has even been known to fill in cavities (Google it). Wouldn't use anything else. Cheap too.

And here's a doctor talking about using coconut oil for oil pulling.

timppu: Take me for example. Ever since I was a kid, dentists always keep telling me how my teeth are so healthy and in good condition... but even I can see they are somewhat yellow, overall.

Caesar.: Same here. Actually my dentist once made me promise I wouldn't commit an atrocity and ruin my teeth with a "miracle" whitener product. She really likes my natural color, I guess, and wasn't fond of that kind of treatment.

Your teeth are going to be with you for the rest of your life (if nothing goes wrong). Perhaps you could seek the advice of a professional and then make an informed decision.
While a professional may be well informed... are they well intentioned? Here in the US, all medical care, including dental, mental, vision, etc., are pay per service. And here in the US, most Doc's offices are part of bigger corporate companies (whose priority is making money.. not health care). This does result in unneeded care being prescribed and done all the time. I don't know if it's that way in the UK but it appears to be heading that way in the whole world (the EXACT wrong way).

In other words, just because you seek a professional advice's, doesn't mean it's actually the best option for you. It may be the best option for the professional to make money.

You always need to be cautious. But my dentist has known my family for a very long time and has treated me since I was a kid, so the trust is there. Just use common sense (and when in doubt, seek a second opinion). :)

kalirion: Or, if you have a standard dental insurance, you go to the dentist every 6 month for a free oral maintenance which includes teeth whitening. I always refuse the stuff tho since it makes me throw up.
Our local community community college has a dental program and you can get cleanings done for like $5.

Five Tips for Making teeth stronger and brush correctly.

1. Place the head of your toothbrush against your teeth, then tilt the bristle tips to a 45 degree angle against the gum line. Move the brush in small circular movements, several times, on all the surfaces of every tooth.

2. Brush the outer surfaces of each tooth, upper and lower, keeping the bristles angled against the gum line.

3. Use the same method on the inside surfaces of all your teeth.

4. Brush the chewing surfaces of the teeth.

5. To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several small circular strokes with the toe (the front part) of the brush.

6. Brushing your tongue will freshen your breath and clean your mouth by removing bacteria.
I understand your point of wanting to do this at home, but dental procedures are just as serious as medical procedures. There's a lot to take into account regarding your teeth and its characteristics, a professional knows this and can identify which procedures would help and which would harm you, so I'd advise you look for a dentist to help you out. Better safe than sorry, you know?
Generally speaking, the price of teeth whitening increases with the number of in-office treatments required by the patient. Dental insurance does not typically cover the cost of the teeth whitening procedure.
Teeth whitening is used to correct discoloration of the teeth by removing the brown and yellow staining. The term "teeth whitening" can refer to a number of techniques to improve the brightness of the patient's teeth. Among them are chemical whitening, mild acid whitening, abrasive teeth brightening and the newest technique, laser teeth whitening.
I used to use the crest white strips but they made my teeth yellow and had to go see a dentist and pay him 60 dollars to whiten the teeth from those damn strips... worst time I tell ya. never use em!
They have these 'cleaning sponges' here.
I've used them once, they definitely make yer teeth whiter, but only because it literally scrapes layers off your teeth.
As in, if you use them enough, you can probably scrape a hole into your teeth and put ear rings through em.

I guess it may be more for people who have stained teeth from coffee/smoking.
