I think it would have been better to be able to choose from a collection of games, as their is zero iimpact if you already have the game they are offering, and I think most of us do!

Perhaps they tried, but Night Dive was the only publisher to accept offering free licenses, and the only game they agreed to give away was System Shock 2?

It's not for free as it has a Galaxy catch attached to it.

I imagine they also wanted to give away something a lot of their longtime users already had gotten for free (or cheap), so that the complaints about Linux users/Galaxy refusers being "unable" to partake would be kept to a minimum.

But THAT didn't work, did it? :P

Actually, I'd say it worked pretty well. Eliminating any possible vectors for complaints, on the other hand, would be impossible. :)
The complaints about free games... yeesh.

Saw a post earlier complaining that they weren't interested in the sale because the free games at the three tiers didn't interest them.

O_o

If you're only buying sale games to get the 'free' ones, you're really doing it wrong...

On the other hand, there are always a few people complaining regardless of what GOG do or don't do.
Am I the only one who thinks that SS2 free is still a rip off? :P

Nope (post 28).

My understanding is that they want to stress test Galaxy, so they needed to choose a game with multiplayer, and it needed to be the same game because a multiplayer game needs lots of players to get more players.

I only have the game because of a similar giveaway in the past, and I have never played it.
Plus there is probably an aspect of building good will for Night Dive with the upcoming Kickstarter for the System Shock 1 remaster.

Well, GOG must know what percentage of customers have any given game, and if it was to stress test multiplayer, they must of known they wouldn't have to give many copies away if they knew the vast majority of us had the game already!!

I'm well aware of that. I did not intend to insinuate that it's the same few people complaining all the time and I'm certainly not trying to limit their rights to state their opinions, just stating my observation that people will complain.
