Hold the freakin' presses! Night Dive, the company responsible for SS 1 Enhanced edition has just said that they plan on remaking the original game. This also brings up the possibility of a System Shock 3, but they said it would require kickstarting.
So this is pretty big news, and I'm kind of excited to see this series being revisited. Hopefully it maintains the originals spirit!

I'm not entirely sure why making SS3 would require a Kickstarter campaign and this doesn't. It's not like they can reuse many assets or designs from the original with a fancy modern engine.

Updating an existing game means knowing all the assets you've got to create, exactly how the story will pan out and so absolutely no time wasted on things which ultimately get replaced. Starting from scratch means having no clue how the final product is going to pan out.

I'm quite interested to see how it will turn out. Nightdive does't have experience developing games do they?
Though I don't think they will have much trouble finding artists to work on such a reputable title.

Well the original IS pretty damned clunky. On many places they really didn't know what they were doing, more than they were just trying things out.

I thought Bioshock was basically SS3, in much the same way that Halo 1 was basically Marathon 4.

In therms carrying on gameplay mechanics and style of storytelling yeah I guess. But it would be great to see the the cliffhanger of SS2 get a proper resolution. Hell, with the introduction of alternate realities, they cross it over with Bioshock if possible.

I always thought BioShock was supposed to be a spiritual successor since EA owned the rights to System Shock and wouldn't let the devs use the license.

Then I played BioShock, and while it has a bit of inspiration taken, they're two different games entirely.

BioShock is pretty much a semi-linear shooter with an intriguing setting, voice logs and the ability to pick up and use medkits and secondary power boosters (Eve instead of batteries). Were it not for the slight character modification I'd say it has as much in common with Duke 3D as it does System Shock.

Is BIoshock a bad game? No not really, but for me it doesn't get very close to the options and style of System Shock. It's a nice, somewhat linear shooter with RPG mechanics thrown in. In System Shock you had pretty open roam of the levels and a reason to backtrack to earlier levels to progress. The choice of sneaking past enemies was actually something you'd consider too. Bioshock railroads you forward and the splicers constantly spawning always tend to move quickly and find you before you know they'd spawned.

They are free to try, but I'd rather see them use their resources on creating something new. System Shock Enhanced is ok because it makes the controls better, but beyond that...

It is the same story as with movie remakes. Certainly the CGI and such will be better in remakes (just look at Total Recall, Robocop etc.), but still...

"One example: Night Dive is developing a full remake of the original System Shock, going well beyond the basic rerelease that launched a couple months ago. Night Dive has acquired the full rights to the franchise, and Kick says he’s been working with Robert Waters, the game's original concept artist, to reimagine his designs from the early 1990s."

Can't find a source (or confirmation, anyway) but I remember reading that Dead Space was originaly developed as SS3.

Uh-oh, so it's not a "remake" it's a "re-imagining". By a company which hasn't ever made a video game before.
