Hello there. So is "Unepic" a metroidvania-style game? Actually, when I saw that screenshot (https://images-4.gog.com/dd99f7e06790d3aa10f3542a787eda6d2336f6ba03f5340cb2bccb66df550b14.jpg) I decided not to investigate further :) this is why I don't play RPGs.

Panaias: Hey there! I have already played this one :) Although I wouldn't categorize it as "metroidvania", I still enjoyed it a lot!
How about Gateways?
I fully recommend both Hollow Knight and Momodora.

First off, Hollow Knight is loaded with gloomy atmosphere, all the familiar progression that you're used to in a good metroidvania, and has a genuinely interesting mystery in its story that will keep you playing to uncover. It's good for both short and long sessions, and really isn't as frustrating as a lot of games in this genre can be, unless you end up in a place you're just simply not ready for. It's well designed and well worth checking out.

Momodora is loaded with charm, and a little sassiness, has great boss battles and decent atmosphere. Also worth checking out.

I've not played it but it looked pretty metroidvani-ish to me with some portal elements obviously.

How is it?

p.s. Favourited the hell out of this topic.

Man if Mystik Belle and Rabi Ribi were over here, I'd be singing the praises of those games up and down.
Steamworld Dig 2. Unfortunately it's not on sale.

There's also Owlboy, but it's rather linear, not that much to do beside following the main story.

you can probably call it a Metroidvania with RPG elements

may as well add Steamworld Dig then, even though it is more linear than 2.

Mystik Belle is DRM-free on itch.io by the looks of it!
Another that is unfortunately not on GOG is Environmental Station Alpha. It's very much a metroidvania, both in look and feel. Seems to be sequence breaking opportunities and the like if that's your bag. It's DRM-free on Humble.

I don't remember it as having that much in common with a Metroidvania game, but then again, it's been a long time since I played it. In any case Steamworld Dig 2 is a much stronger contender for the genre, IMO. But the first one is fun to play as well, regardless of the label.

Yeah, I don't recall Dig 1 being particularly Metroidvania-like. It's more or less just a straight trip downwards.
speaking of which, this bundle just popped up on Steam

Just noticed there is actually a metroidvania genre on GOG:

Interesting. Not sure whether it's only more recently they started using the term or whether they're using a narrow definition, but there are some games on GOG I would have expected to be in there.

Incomplete as always, but still helpful. Aquaria! How could I forget Aquaria! Not on sale either, but totally worth it. (Even though I gave up on the final boss and technically never beat the game because of it, that wasn't my idea of fun, but I loved the rest of the game.)

I think the problem is that they only ever use three different tags per game, and often it seems rather random which ones get chosen.

Panaias: Hey there! I could use some help as the title suggests. I usually play adventure games (almost exclusively) but sometimes I might make an exception for some metroidvania pleasure :) So far I have played Ori and the Blind Forest (which I LOVED), Guacamelee (super blabla edition - which I liked too), Hollow Knight (also great game!). What other similar games have you played (and would suggest) on GOG? I've been eyeing Dust - an Elysian Tale for a while but I don't know how "similar" it is to the aforementioned ones (gameplay-wise). Also, I have mastered the art of patience and still haven't bought Axiom Verge from any other store :P
A few more I'd recommend are Valdis Story: Abyssal City and Iconoclasts. There are a few other titles with Metroidvania elements you can take a look at like Dex, Wuppo, and Treasure Adventure Game/World, but they may not necessarily be what you are looking for.
