This. This is very important. Do not under any circumstances get an AMD graphics card if you plan to game on Linux.

thank you all for all the amazing help! I am glad I posted this, b/c talking to you all made me realize i really want a better pc than 600 can afford me and I am now hunting down deals for the parts I want. I already found a great deal on a high-end i5 which I totally thought would not be in budget :) I may evan stalk some i7s ;) It may take me longer than I want to have my pc, but i think i'll be happier in the long run.

also, thank you for all the comparison charts/websites. they were/are very very very helpful and are saving me money.

Random_Coffee: Well, you have a good point :P Don't cheap out on the power supply. Get it from a reputable brand. Someone who knows more about this than me can provide the list of good brands. Also, if you buy Corsair, don't buy one of their CX-branded PSUs!
Well the best to me I guess would be "Seasonic" and the second best would be "Corsair". The rule of thumb says though that if a PSU advertises X Watts and costs Y money, and another one with the same specs says X Watts but 2xY money..............go with the latter, like the saying goes "If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is" :P

this is my next purchase and i was totally wondering about what loboblanco says further down. i'm going to a local computer store and picking some brains.
