search fails me, or I fail search, because I know I've seen this topic before, but I can't find it.

So I'm getting some annoyances trying to DL all the large files for a game, so I decided to just let galaxy install the game for me.
The first thing that Galaxy does is update every single game I've installed. Even the ones that are up to date.

What the hell is it doing?

Also, I can only find a disable automatic update setting on a game by game basis. Is there no global setting?
(FYI, I manually installed every gog game to this point, and aside from installing it briefly for that previous SS2 giveaway, I haven't used Galaxy)

Isn't there a button to stop auto update?

I bitch about Galaxy a lot but when it first came out I jumped on it, but quickly got rid of it, and this is why. It kept updating, Escapists I think with what turned out to be a screwed up patch that was later removed. Problem is it was there for a week before being removed and Galaxy kept installing it. :P It was minor pain under the circumstances but enough for me to get rid of it.

One day, some far off day, I may return.

It needs to "adjust/integrate/make compatible" them to galaxy. So yes, every stupid game will update. It is only on game by game basis. They never introduced a feature for generally turning it off until now.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Nice to know its just an updating things for galaxy thing, not galaxy gone "i eat paint chips" stupid. Still slightly annoying to see it randomly deciding to just mass downloa things and not tell me.

the "no global auto-update off button" thing is kind of silly.

While I have this thread up and active, how does galaxy handle DLC?
I ask because the game i'm interested in (Van Helsing, final cut) includes a texture pack DLC.
I don't plan on using said DLC because as far as I can find it increases the ram requirements beyond what my computer has. (Looked up the DLC on steam, since i couldn't find any word of it on GOG at all.)

So basically since I can't realy use it, I dont' want it on my hard drive taking up space.
If it automatically does DLC, is there a way to stop it from installing/dling it? or to uninstall it afterwards?

if you own the DLC it will download and install it when you download the game, you can then go to settings and uncheck the DLC which will remove it. Or you could download the standalone installer via backup and goodies and import the game without the DLC. I believe it won't install the DLC without you manually checking the DLC in that situation. This is planned, just not currently active...

Automatically installing DLC seems like a bad idea to me. Especially in cases like this where its a freebie that everyone will get, and it increases requirements if its turned on.

Or worse, some of the games you have to completely re-DL the entire game all over again, all Nth gigabytes of it, whereas galaxy gets small patches.

Or even worse, like Titan Quest, even a few kb of an update means the entire DL for none galaxy users. (TQ has also been updated loads since release & not a single patch has ever been offered.

Or even worserer (Know not a real word, but it'll suffice ;p) you get games like Shadow Warrior2 with its new DLC/Challenges, that doesn't even get patches, all older patches are removed from site & we're told no offline patch until next game update...

This is because they cant give you a patch when they are not given a patch... when a Dev supports Steam first this happens as steam is a per file system, Galaxy works like steam and as such gets patches first... gog.com downloads need to be packaged and setup by the dev, and in rare cases gog themselves was allowed to.

bottom line if the dev didn't release a patch GoG cant supply one only a full install. This issue should be taken up with the partners of the GoG, or maybe a wishlist item GoG can use to show a good amount still like patches.

that said there were many people screaming about not getting a Witcher 3 GOTY edition if they owned the original (because that had to navigate a complected patched install) this may be confusing lol

Eh I'm pretty sure GOG packages the patches themselves... they are only sent the patch files. Just like when a patch is sent to Galaxy using the new patching system, GOG grabs the files and creates the standalone installer from those files.

Now GOG might receive completely new builds of a game (and not separate patch files with only the changes) in which case they would have to re-package the entire game again as a full download, but again I'm pretty sure GOG is the one doing that.

Hmmm. I wonder. Because it wouldn't be very hard at all to use/make a couple scripts that takes version 1.1 and version 1.2, and deletes duplicate files from 1.2, and then take the remainder and make it a patch. However if the file exceeds, say. 50Mb, then a patch starts to become cumbersome.

Regardless, version control is it's own level of fascinating.
